Tourist Attractions
The former JNR Hiroo Line’s “Aikoku Station” and “Kofuku Station” are famous stations that once sparked a nationwide boom. It was said that buying a ticket here would bring “love and happiness,” and 13 million tickets were sold at the time. Today, Kofuku Station is a railway park, and Aikoku Station is a transportation museum.
This lovely birch-lined avenue in Otofuke has become a popular stop for visitors to the area. Dozens of delicate white birch trees line a 1.3km stretch of road, making for a dynamic landscape. It’s no surprise that Tokachi Ranch’s White Birch Avenue has been repeatedly used as a backdrop in movies and TV.
Washo Market is said to be one of Hokkaidos top three markets alongside Hakodates Morning Market and Sapporos Nijo Market. Washo is Kushiros oldest market with a fascinating history as a civic kitchen in the early post-war period. It also boasts an excellent range of seafood and processed marine products, just as you might expect from a port town like Kushiro.
Voted as one of the “Top Three Sunsets in the World” alongside other famous worldwide spots like Bali and Manila, Kushiro in East Hokkaido is a reputed sunset-viewing location. Walk along Kita-Odori Street from JR Kushiro Station for about 15 minutes and you’ll come across the viewing spot: the 124-meter-long Nusamai Bridge. Four female statues, the Shiki no Zo, stand atop the guardrails of the bridge and make for a beautiful image when the setting sun paints the sky a calm vermillion hue behind them.
Lake Akan, located in eastern Hokkaido, is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes. It is designated as Akan-Mashu National Park together with the surrounding Lake Kussharo, Lake Mashu, and Lake Enuchi.
Lake Kussharo is one of the largest caldera lakes in Japan, with a circumference of 57 kilometers and a maximum depth of 125 meters. Located in the beautiful Akan National Park, this lake is surrounded by the magnificent Mount Mashu and Mount Shari so visitors looking to do some hiking will not be disappointed.
Mt. Io is an active volcano with an altitude of 512 m. White smoke containing sulfur rises from the mountainsides, which have a countless number of fumaroles. You can go up close to the fumaroles for the full impact as the smell of sulfur envelopes you.
Lake Mashu is a mysterious lake surrounded by the pristine nature of Akan-Mashu National Park. The deep blue glow of the lake attracts many visitors. The air is also clean, making it a great place to watch the stars.
From Kayodai Observatory in Nakashibetsu, enjoy the sights of cows grazing on hilly pastures, the quaint pastoral landscapes of stables and farmhouses, and pencil-straight roads continuing long past the horizon and toward the distant Sea of Okhotsk (which separates Japan from Russia).
Located between the Shiretoko Peninsula and the Nemuro Peninsula, the Notsuke Peninsula stretches out like an arm into the Sea of Okhotsk. It is the largest sand spit in Japan, with a total length of approximately 26 km. *A sand spit is a landform created by sand carried by ocean currents and deposited over many years. The intricate coastline created by the erosion of ocean currents is one of the reasons why the Notsuke Peninsula is home to a diverse array of life.

Within the World Heritage Site of Shiretoko, Shiretoko Goko Lakes is perhaps one of the most famous. Consisting of five small lakes located in the middle of ancient forests and the Shiretoko Mountains, the beautiful scenery to be found here, where sky, mountains, and water meet, is certainly worth a special trip.

There is a straight road that stretches out for 28.1 km amidst beautiful scenery overlooking the majestic mountains of Shiretoko, among other sights. This road appears to lead all the way to heaven, which is why it has been dubbed "The Road to the Sky."

Märchen Hill can be found along National Highway 39, running through Memanbetsu in Ozora, Hokkaido. The picturesque view from the top has famously been used for on-location shooting in countless movies. With the sprawling fields combined with the solemn larch trees perched at its top, Märchen Hill has the fairy tale charm that has made it such a popular tourist spot.

The Abashiri Prison Museum is an outdoor museum of history where buildings of the original Abashiri Prison are conserved and exhibited. Abashiri Prison and the City of Abashiri have maintained close relationships since the Meiji era (1868-1912).

Cape Notoro is a cape located to the north of Abashiri. The cliffs stretch from the mouth of the Abashiri River to the Sea of Okhotsk, with the lighthouse standing atop the cape. From late January to mid-March each year, the Sea of Okhotsk is filled with drifting ice, creating a spectacular sight as if the sea is paved with ice. During May to October, one can also witness the pastoral scenes of cattle and horses grazing at the nearby Mi-Cape Ranch.

Kitakitsune Fox Farm is located in Onneyu Onsenkyo in Rubeshibe Town, Kitami City. Over 60 northern foxes are allowed to roam freely here in conditions close to those of the wild.

The vast hilly area that spreads out to the northwest of Biei city is called the "Patchwork Road" and is a familiar view spot featured in Hokkaido tourist brochures and commercials. The road got its name from the fact that the various crops planted in each section looked like a patchwork. In Biei Town, the Panorama Road area stretches to the south of the Patchwork Road. This is a popular tourist route with many elevated plateaus where you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the surroundings. There are many galleries, including the "Photo Gallery Takushinkan" of the photographer who made the hill town of Biei known throughout Japan, and the "San'ai no Oka Observation Park" with its red triangular roof. Of these, the Shinei-no-oka Observation Park is reputed to offer the most beautiful view of the sunset in the area.

The Shirahige Waterfalls in the Shirogane Onsen Area of Biei originate from a cluster of ground streams that gush out of the cliff-side and into the stream below. This unique type of waterfall is a rarity, even in Japan. The Biei River, which flows beneath the waterfall, is often called the “Blue River” due to its deep cobalt blue hue. The flowing blue river and the starkly contrasting white of the rushing falls create a truly breath-taking sight. From November to April, visitors to the falls can experience a gorgeous evening event in which the falls are illuminated with dozens of twinkling lights.

The Blue Pond is a happy accident. Located near the town of Biei, the pond was created to stop damage from mudflows from Mt. Tokachi. The color of the pond ranges from a vibrant turquoise to emerald to cobalt blue, caused by impurities in the waters from the Shirahige Falls. The seasons and the wind, clouds, and rain can all change its aspect.

Shikisai no Oka (Four Seasons Hill) is a flower garden on a hill carpeted with flowers from April to October. This feast for the eye features tulips, lupine, lavender, salvia, sunflowers, dahlia, and Japanese anemone. While driving through central Hokkaido, make sure to take the renowned “Roller Coaster Road” in order to experience the beautiful and varied scenery of Kamifurano. The road, characterized by its abrupt ascending and descending slopes, is a straight 4-kilometer route that cuts through some of Hokkaido’s most iconic landscape. The beginning of this road is marked by a signpost reading “West 11 Farm Road,” and stands along national highway No. 237. From there, the road climbs and descends, not unlike a roller coaster, for 2.5 kilometers, passing by the beautiful hills and paddy fields at the base of the Mt. Tokachi Range.

A small village of log-houses sits spirited away in the forests of Furano, not far from the New Furano Prince Hotel. This charming little hidden village emanates a magical air about it, and many local artisans come to sell their one-of-a-kind wares here. With its iconic, orderly fields of flowers, Farm Tomita is one of the most photographed spots in Hokkaido and a major draw in summer. While they make for spectacular photographs, the gentle hills carpeted in lavender and other blooms fill the air with relaxing scents. While the farm has blooms from April to October, the iconic fields of lavender are best viewed from early to late July.

Hinode Lavender Garden - This is a scenic spot with lavender fields to the west and the Tokachi Mountain range to the east. During the lavender blooming season from late June to early August, the entire 4.2-hectare area of hills is dyed a brilliant purple color..
