The Nordic countries share a latitude, not a character. Iceland is volcanic and empty; Norway is fjords and coastline; Sweden is forest, lakes and archipelago; Finland is taiga, sauna and the clearest winter sky of the four. Travelling between them is easy by air, and the right combination depends on whether you are chasing the northern lights, the midnight sun, or neither.

All four are winter destinations in the popular imagination — but June and July in Norway and Sweden are among the best summer journeys in Europe, with light until midnight.

Finland — taiga, sauna and Lapland

Helsinki for design and archipelago, then north to Lapland for aurora, reindeer and glass-roofed cabins. Sauna is not an amenity here; it is the social institution.

Iceland — volcanic and empty

Golden Circle, the south coast waterfalls and glaciers, the east fjords, and the north around Akureyri. Best done as a self-drive loop, and best outside July–August if you want the roads to yourself.

Norway — fjords and coast

Bergen and the western fjords, the Atlantic Road, Lofoten in either midnight sun or aurora season, and Oslo for the museums. The Hurtigruten coastal route is a journey in itself.

Sweden — forest and archipelago

Stockholm and its 30,000 islands, the lake country west of the city, and Swedish Lapland for the Icehotel and aurora. The most understated of the four, and the easiest to travel slowly.

September to March, with the clearest statistical chance in February and March. You need darkness, clear sky and patience.

Can the four be combined?

Yes, by air. Two of them in ten days is comfortable; all four needs three weeks or more.
