We plan private Thailand tours with a driver and guide. The useful split is the north for culture and mountains, and the south for islands — trying to do both in a week usually means a lot of time in airports.

North and south

Bangkok works as a two-night base, then Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai for temples, hill country and craft villages. In the south, Phuket and Krabi are the practical bases, with boat days planned around the weather rather than a fixed schedule.

Practical points

Traffic in Bangkok changes the shape of a day; we plan around it rather than through it. Domestic flights are cheap and often faster than driving long distances.
