Collection: TRAINS

We plan rail travel as part of an itinerary, and you buy the tickets in your own name. We do not resell rail passes; we tell you which trains make sense, which do not, and where a car is faster door to door.

Where rail beats a car

Japan's shinkansen is usually faster city-centre to city-centre than flying, once transfers and security are counted. In Europe, intercity rail is excellent between capitals but poor for reaching the countryside. China's high-speed network is fast and punctual but station locations can add an hour at each end.

How we decide

Count the door-to-door time

A 90-minute flight with two hours of airport on each side is a five-hour day. We compare the whole journey, not the timetable.

Keep the luggage problem in mind

Rail is comfortable with a small bag and awkward with three large cases, especially on Japanese commuter platforms. On routes with several stops, a car and driver removes that entirely.

Mixed plans often win

Many of our itineraries use rail for the long city-to-city leg and a private car for the regional days. That combination is usually cheaper and faster than either alone.
