Collection: France
France rewards the traveller who leaves Paris. The country has a dozen landscapes that have nothing to do with each other: the limestone gorges of Provence, the vineyard villages of Burgundy, the half-timbered towns of Alsace, the Atlantic coast from Brittany down to Biarritz, and the Alps in between.
Where we usually build France
Paris for three or four days, then either south to Provence and the Riviera, or west to the Loire and Burgundy. A driving itinerary is the right shape here — the pleasure is between the towns, not inside them.
Timing
May, June and September are the best months: warm, long days, and none of the August congestion. Lavender in Provence peaks late June to mid-July; the grape harvest runs September into October.
