Two routes that work

South: London, then west to Bath and the Cotswolds, then north through the Peak District to York. North: Edinburgh, then the Highlands and Skye, which needs a car and at least four days.

Practical

June to September for weather and daylight — in the Highlands it barely gets dark in June. Distances look short and take longer than you expect; a private driver is worth more here than in most of Europe.
