Collection: The Baltic states

The three Baltic states are compact, distinct and easy to combine. Tallinn is medieval and digital at once; Riga has the finest art nouveau architecture in Europe; Vilnius is baroque and unhurried. Each capital is a few hours by road or rail from the next.

The route

Tallinn south to Riga, Riga south to Vilnius — a week lets you do all three properly, with the Curonian Spit and the Hill of Crosses between the last two. Add St Petersburg or Helsinki by ferry if you have longer.

Timing

June to August for the long northern evenings and the song festivals. December for the Christmas markets, which are among the best in Europe and far less crowded than Germany’s.
