Collection: CAR RENTALS

We plan self-drive routes and you rent the car in your own name. Self-drive suits some itineraries and ruins others; the deciding factor is whether the driving is part of the trip or just a way to get there.

Where self-drive works well

Hokkaido, rural Tohoku, the European countryside, Tasmania and New Zealand's South Island. Quiet roads, scenery between the stops, and accommodation that would be awkward to reach otherwise.

Where it works badly

Tokyo, Osaka, central Rome and Paris: parking costs more than the car, and the driving is the worst part of the day. For those, a car with a driver is better value than a rental.

Licences and translations

Japan requires an International Driving Permit under the 1949 convention, and some nationalities cannot use it — we check before you book. Left-hand drive and winter tyres change the plan too.

One-way rentals and drop fees

A one-way route often makes a better trip, but drop-off fees can be significant. We cost it both ways before recommending one.

Tell us the route and who is driving, and we will say whether self-drive is the right call. Planning is free — WhatsApp +852 6888 4736.
