Choosing islands

The Cyclades are the whitewashed, wind-blown archetype — Santorini and Mykonos are the famous ones, Naxos and Milos the better-value neighbours. The Ionian islands are greener and softer. Crete is a country in itself and needs a week.

Practical

Ferries are reliable but weather-dependent; a private driver on each island removes the taxi negotiation. July and August are hot and crowded — June and September are the same sea with half the people.
