Nepal is small and vertical. Within 200 kilometres you go from tropical jungle at 100 metres to the edge of the highest mountains on earth, and the culture changes with the altitude.

The three parts

Kathmandu valley for the temples and the old cities of Patan and Bhaktapur. Pokhara for the lake, the Annapurna panorama and the start of the trekking routes. Chitwan for jungle and rhino. A comfortable itinerary is a week; two weeks lets you walk.

Trekking

You do not have to summit anything. The Ghorepani and Poon Hill circuit is four or five days of walking with teahouse accommodation and a view that justifies the effort. Porters and guides are arranged locally and fairly.
