Collection: Guangdong Province

Guangdong is not one destination. It is a province of five distinct travel regions, each with its own landscape, dialect and — above all — its own food. The Cantonese delta around Guangzhou is dense, urban and restaurant-driven; the north around Qingyuan climbs into limestone country; Huizhou faces the South China Sea; Zhanjiang sits on the tropical Leizhou peninsula; and Chaoshan, in the east, is the ancestral home of a culinary tradition that has travelled the world and changed very little.

Because the regions are so different, the right itinerary depends entirely on what you want: food, coastline, mountains or heritage. Below are the five areas we build Guangdong journeys around.

Qingyuan — limestone country and hot springs

The north of the province: karst peaks, river gorges and the hot springs around the Qingxin hills. Best for travellers who want scenery and a slower pace, and easy to combine with Guangzhou by road.

Huizhou — the coast

A long stretch of South China Sea shoreline, from the old town on the river to the beaches and islands further east. Good for a coastal few days without flying anywhere.

Zhanjiang — the tropical south

On the Leizhou peninsula, facing Hainan across the strait. Seafood, volcanic landscape and a distinctly tropical feel — the least visited of the five, and the most different.

Guangzhou & Conghua — city and hot springs

The provincial capital for food and architecture, then Conghua inland for hot springs and forest. The classic arrival point, and the easiest to do in two or three days.

Chaoshan — the food region

The ancestral home of Chaoshan cuisine: beef hotpot, goose, oyster omelette and a tea culture of its own. The old streets of Chaozhou and Shantou are the reason to come.
