Zhejiang is a province on China's east coast, south of Shanghai, and this collection brings together private itineraries that travel through it by road. Most routes begin in Hangzhou, a city known for West Lake and for Longjing tea, where the water is at its calmest early in the morning. South of Hangzhou, the Yandang mountains are a range of rhyolite peaks, and Shenxianju is a valley of cliffs and rivers. Distances between these places are manageable by car, which makes the province straightforward to travel with a private driver and a workable choice for a first trip to China with a family.

What is the weather like through the year?

Spring and autumn are generally mild and are the most comfortable seasons for walking and for the mountains. Summers are hot and humid, and the coast can be affected by typhoons between July and September. Winters are cooler and drier, and West Lake and the towns remain open to visitors.

How many days should we allow?

Hangzhou alone can fill two days, and the routes in this collection are five and six days. Five days suits Hangzhou with one mountain area; six days allows both the Yandang range and Shenxianju without long days in the car.

How do we travel between the places?

By private car with a driver, which suits Zhejiang's roads and the mountain areas in particular. Trains link Hangzhou with other major cities, but Yandang and Shenxianju are easier to reach by road. We give honest driving times for each leg before you confirm.
