Routes we plan

Taipei and the north coast, then Taichung and Sun Moon Lake, then Tainan for the old capital, is the standard west-coast line. The east coast — Hualien and Taroko — is the scenic alternative, though the mountain road is weather-dependent.

Practical points

Taipei traffic is heavy at peak hours, and the mountain roads need a driver who knows them. Food is usually the reason people return, so we build the day around markets and specific restaurants rather than general areas.
