Chaoshan is the east of Guangdong — the cities of Chaozhou, Shantou and Jieyang — and the ancestral home of a cuisine that has travelled the world intact. Beef hotpot, braised goose, oyster omelette, and a tea culture that is a ritual in its own right.

The old streets of Chaozhou, with their arcaded shopfronts and ancestral halls, are the reason to come. Shantou adds the port and the coast.

What Chaoshan is good for

Food, first and always. Then the old city of Chaozhou, the Guangji Bridge, and the tea houses. Two to three days is enough to eat properly.
