The Duku highway is the reason this route exists: it cuts through the Tianshan and is only open for a few months a year. Sayram Lake sits high on the way, and the Ili valley beyond is green in a way the rest of Xinjiang is not. Because the pass closes with snow, this is a summer itinerary and we say so up front.
