Xi'an to Chengdu by High-Speed Rail
The Xi'an to Chengdu high-speed rail covers roughly 650 kilometres and takes between 3 hours 30 minutes and 4 hours 30 minutes, depending on the service. Trains run daily on the Xi'an–Chengdu Railway, with several departures spread across the day, and tickets are available in second class, first class and business class. Foreign passport holders can book with their passport as the ID, but they must carry the same passport used for booking to pass the gate check.

Journey times and classes of service
The line runs at 250 km/h for most of its length, so the fastest services complete the trip in about three and a half hours. Slower services that stop at more intermediate stations take closer to four and a half hours. Timetables change seasonally, so check current schedules on 12306 (the official China Railway booking platform) or a licensed travel operator before you plan connections.
All trains on this route are *Gao Tie* (G-series) or *Dong Che* (D-series) high-speed services. Second class seats are arranged 3+2 across, with a tray table and standard legroom for the journey length. First class is 2+2 and noticeably quieter. Business class has fully reclining seats and is a good option if you want to work or sleep on the way. There is no dining car on most services, but a trolley passes through with snacks and drinks, and you may bring your own food on board.
Booking as a foreign traveller
Tickets go on sale approximately 15 days before departure, and popular departures sell out within hours — particularly Friday evenings, Sunday evenings and Chinese public holidays. You can book through the 12306 website or app, through a licensed tour operator, or through some hotel concierge desks in China. The system accepts foreign passports as the ID document, but the name must be entered exactly as it appears in the machine-readable zone of your passport.
At the station, you will need to pass a ticket gate that scans your passport and matches it to your booking. Arrive at least 45 minutes before departure for domestic high-speed services; security screening is required and queues can be long at peak times.
Which station, and how to reach the centre
In Xi'an, almost all trains to Chengdu depart from Xi'an North Station (Xi'an Bei). It is the city's main high-speed hub, about 16 kilometres north of the city wall and Bell Tower area. The Xi'an Metro Line 2 connects the station directly to the centre in roughly 35–45 minutes, depending on your destination stop. A taxi takes about 30–45 minutes outside of rush hour.
In Chengdu, trains arrive at either Chengdu East Station (Chengdu Dong) or, less often, Chengdu Station. Chengdu East is the primary high-speed terminus, located about 8 kilometres east of Tianfu Square. Metro Lines 2 and 7 serve it directly into the centre in 20–30 minutes. Confirm which station your ticket shows before you arrange an onward transfer.
Why rail beats flying on this route
When you count the full door-to-door time, rail is faster than flying Xi'an to Chengdu. Xi'an Xianyang Airport and Chengdu's airports (Shuangliu and Tianfu) are each 30–60 minutes from their city centres, with check-in, security and boarding adding at least another two hours. The flight itself is about an hour and twenty minutes in the air. In practice, flying takes 5–6 hours end to end; the train takes 3.5–4.5 hours plus a short metro ride from each station. Rail is also more reliable in winter, when fog can delay flights in the Sichuan basin.
Breaking the journey: Hanzhong and Guangyuan
The line crosses the Qinling Mountains between the two cities, and two stops make natural overnight breaks if you prefer a gentler pace.
Hanzhong sits in the basin south of the Qinling range. The Hanzhong Gao Tie station is about 20 kilometres from the old town; allow 30 minutes by taxi. The area is worth a stop for the ancient town and the wetland scenery, and it breaks a long day into two comfortable halves.
Guangyuan is further north and quieter, with useful connections onward to Jiuzhaigou by road. Most travellers on a two-week itinerary go direct, but either stop works if you have an extra day and want to avoid back-to-back travel.
Luggage, network connections, and timing your day
There are no strict checked-luggage limits on Chinese high-speed trains. Each passenger may bring luggage that fits in the racks above the seats or at the ends of the carriages; two large cases plus a day bag is straightforward. There is no porter service, so factor in a few minutes to lift bags onto the train.
The line connects onward easily: from Chengdu, high-speed services continue to Chongqing (about 1.5–2 hours) and to Kunming (about 6–7 hours on the newer line). Chongqing links back into the national network toward Yangtze River ports; Kunming connects onward to Dali, Lijiang and the Southeast Asian gateway at the China–Laos border. Buying the Xi'an–Chengdu leg and the onward leg as one itinerary is simpler than changing tickets en route.
Morning departures from Xi'an arrive in Chengdu in the early afternoon, which leaves a full evening to eat and explore. Early evening departures arrive after dark. If the train you want is full, check for alternative departure times the same day, or the day before and after — availability often opens up as other travellers shift their plans. Second class sells out first; first and business class frequently remain available when second class is gone.
Note that visa and entry rules for China change. Confirm current requirements with the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country, and with your airline, before you book any non-refundable travel.
