Kyoto Private Tour: Temples, Arashiyama and Nara

Kyoto is the one city where a private car changes the day completely. Buses are slow and crowded; with a driver you can reach Fushimi Inari at 6:30am, Arashiyama before the crowds, and a temple in the north by mid-morning.

Kyoto: what the buses hide from you

Kyoto's bus network is the reason people misjudge the city. A single ride from Kyoto Station to Kinkaku-ji takes 40 minutes standing, and in November the queue at the stop can exceed two buses. A car does the same trip in 20 minutes and leaves you at the gate.

Temples close early and keep to it. Most close at 16:30–17:00, with last entry 30 minutes before. Fushimi Inari is the exception — open all hours, and genuinely empty before 7:00 and after 20:00.

Parking exists, but not where you want it. Kiyomizu-dera and Arashiyama both have car parks that fill by 10:00 in peak season; a driver who knows the day will drop you and park elsewhere rather than circle.

Gion has rules now. Photography is prohibited in several private lanes, with signs and fines. Walk the main streets, and treat the side alleys as people's homes rather than a set.

Two days, split east and west, beats three days zig-zagging. East: Kiyomizu-dera at 7:00, Nanzen-ji, Eikando, Gion at dusk. West: Arashiyama at 8:00, Tenryu-ji, Kinkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji. That routing saves roughly an hour of traffic each day.
