Osaka: the base that saves you the most time

Kansai Airport to central Osaka is 45–55 minutes by car, and the road is rarely blocked. That single fact is why Osaka usually beats Kyoto as a base: you land, you are at the hotel before the airport train queue clears.

USJ decides the traffic around the bay. On weekends and school holidays the approach roads to Universal Studios back up from 08:30. If you are not going, avoid the bay area in the morning; if you are, be there at opening.

Dotonbori is a night place. The signs are the point, so go after dark, and eat before 18:00 or after 21:00 to skip the worst queues. Kuromon market is a morning place — most stalls wind down by 15:00.

The day trips are the real reason to have a car. Nara in 45 minutes, Kobe in 40, Himeji in 70, Koyasan in 90. By train, each of these eats a half-day in transfers; by car they are stops on one loop.

Hotel tax and parking both apply. Osaka charges an accommodation tax, and city hotels charge 1,500–3,000 yen a night for parking. A driver who drops and parks outside the centre can save that.
