Aman has three properties in Japan and they are deliberately unlike each other: a city hotel above Otemachi, a garden retreat in north Kyoto, and a hot-spring resort on a bay in Ise-Shima. Choosing between them is a route question, not a quality question — and Aman itself sells them as a journey rather than as alternatives.
Here is what each one is for, how many nights it deserves, and the three itineraries that actually work.

The three, in plain terms
| Aman Tokyo | Otemachi, central Tokyo, high in the Otemachi Tower | City stay with a Japanese-inn sensibility; spa and pool; walk to the Imperial Palace gardens |
| Aman Kyoto | North Kyoto, in a wooded garden setting | Quiet garden sanctuary; moss, stone paths, onsen-style bathing; away from the crowds |
| Amanemu | Ago Bay, Ise-Shima | Hot-spring resort by the sea; pearl country; near Ise Grand Shrine |
Aman Tokyo: two nights, at the start or the end
Central, quiet, and designed to feel like a Japanese inn rather than a skyscraper hotel — despite being in one. It is the easiest Aman to reach, which makes it the natural first or last stop of any Japan trip.
Two nights is right: one to arrive and eat well, one to see the city. Longer than that and you are paying Aman prices to commute to sightseeing.

Aman Kyoto: two to three nights, and it is not a city hotel
Set in a wooded garden in the north of the city, away from the hotel strip and the crowds. The appeal is the stillness: moss, stone, trees, and a property that behaves like a retreat while Kyoto is twenty minutes away.
Three nights if you want both the temples and a day of doing nothing. Two if Kyoto is one stop on a longer trip. It suits couples and anyone who has already seen the main sights and now wants them without the noise.

Amanemu: the one people underestimate
Ise-Shima is two and a half to three hours from either Tokyo or Kyoto by train and car, which is exactly why it stays quiet. The region is Japan's pearl coast, with Ise Grand Shrine — the country's most important Shinto shrine — nearby, and hot springs at the resort.
Three nights minimum, because the transfer is real and the point is to stop moving. It pairs badly with a rushed itinerary and beautifully with a slow one.

Three itineraries that work
City and garden (5 nights)
Aman Tokyo 2 → Aman Kyoto 3. The simplest Aman trip in Japan, and the easiest to fit into a first visit.
The full Aman journey (7 nights)
Aman Tokyo 2 → Aman Kyoto 2 → Amanemu 3. This is the version Aman itself promotes: city, garden, then coast and hot springs. Add a driver for the Kyoto–Ise-Shima leg.
Coast only (4 nights)
Amanemu 3, with a night in Tokyo to connect. For repeat visitors who have done the cities and want water, shrine and silence.

How Aman compares with the alternatives
- Against the Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons — Aman is quieter, smaller and more expensive; the service is less visible and more anticipatory. If you want a club lounge and a tower view, Aman Tokyo is not that.
- Against FUFU — FUFU is a Japanese ryokan-style resort with private open-air baths; Aman Kyoto is a garden retreat with onsen-style bathing but a more international register.
- Against a ryokan — a ryokan gives you the fixed dinner, the tatami and the ritual. Aman gives you space, privacy and flexibility. Different products.
What to be honest about
Aman does not fix a badly ordered route, and it does not suit everyone: children are welcome but the atmosphere is quiet, and there is no nightlife within walking distance at Kyoto or Amanemu. If your trip is about shopping, restaurants and late evenings, a city hotel will serve you better at a lower price.
Frequently asked questions
How many Aman properties are there in Japan?
Three: Aman Tokyo, Aman Kyoto, and Amanemu in Ise-Shima.
How long does it take to get to Amanemu?
Roughly two and a half to three hours from Tokyo or Kyoto by Shinkansen and car, which is why three nights is the sensible minimum.
Can we combine all three?
Yes — seven nights, Tokyo two, Kyoto two, Amanemu three, with a driver for the transfer to Ise-Shima.
Is Aman suitable for children?
Welcome, but the properties are quiet and the pools and spas are calm. Families often do better at a resort with more space to run.
