There are seven Ritz-Carlton properties in Japan, and they are not interchangeable. Two are city hotels in towers, three are in old capitals, one sits inside a national park with the brand's first hot spring, and one is a ski reserve in Hokkaido. Choosing between them is a question about your route, not about quality.
Below: what each one is actually for, how it fits a trip, and which to pick first.

The seven, by purpose
| Ritz-Carlton Tokyo | Roppongi, in the Midtown Tower | City base; skyline views, club lounge, dining |
| Ritz-Carlton Kyoto | On the Kamogawa, facing Higashiyama | City base for temples; river views |
| Ritz-Carlton Osaka | Osaka | City base for Kansai; food and nightlife |
| Ritz-Carlton Fukuoka | Fukuoka, Kyushu | Gateway to Kyushu; food city |
| Ritz-Carlton Nikko | Lake Chuzenji, Nikko National Park | Mountain and lake; the brand's first onsen |
| Ritz-Carlton Okinawa | Okinawa main island | Beach resort; golf, sea, slow days |
| Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve | Niseko, Hokkaido | Snow and skiing; small, reserve-level service |

If your trip is Tokyo and Kyoto
Tokyo and Kyoto, one city hotel in each. This is the simplest strong itinerary in Japan, and both properties are built for it: Tokyo for the city at height, Kyoto for the city at river level with the eastern temples in view.
Five to seven nights, with a driver for the transfers and trains inside the cities. If you have one spare night, spend it in Nikko rather than adding a third city.

If you want the mountain, not the city

Nikko. Lake Chuzenji, the Irohazaka road, Kegon Falls and the shrine complex below — and the first Ritz-Carlton in the world with a hot spring, fed from Yumoto. Two nights minimum, because the drive up is a real drive.

It pairs naturally with Tokyo: two city nights, two lake nights, one more in the city.

If you are going to Kyushu

Fukuoka. It is the practical gateway for a Kyushu route — ramen, yatai stalls, and a base for day trips to Dazaifu or down towards Kumamoto and the onsen towns. It also works as the first or last stop on a longer western Japan trip.

If the trip is a beach or a ski slope
Okinawa for sea, golf and resort days — a different trip entirely, usually four to five nights, best in spring and autumn when the humidity is lower.
Niseko for snow: a Reserve property rather than a classic Ritz-Carlton, small and quiet, and the right base if the point of the trip is powder rather than cities.

How to sequence them
- Classic first trip (7 nights): Tokyo 3 → Nikko 2 → Kyoto 2.
- Kansai focus (6 nights): Osaka 2 → Kyoto 3 → Nara day → Osaka out.
- Food and west (8 nights): Tokyo 2 → Osaka 2 → Fukuoka 3.
- Snow (5 nights): Tokyo 1 → Niseko 4.
- Sea (5 nights): Okinawa 4, with a night in Tokyo either side if you must connect.

What none of them solve
A hotel does not fix a badly ordered route. If you have five days and plan to see Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, no property in this list will make that pleasant — the fix is removing a city, not upgrading a room.
Frequently asked questions
Which Ritz-Carlton in Japan is best for a first trip?
Tokyo and Kyoto, one in each. They are the two cities a first trip is built around.
Which one has the hot spring?
Nikko — the first Ritz-Carlton anywhere with a natural onsen, sourced from Yumoto Onsen.
Is the Niseko property a normal Ritz-Carlton?
No. It is a Ritz-Carlton Reserve — a smaller property with a different style of service, which is why it feels unlike the city hotels.
Can we stay in several on one trip?
Yes, and it is common: Tokyo, Nikko and Kyoto in one week works well, with a driver for the mountain leg.
