FUFU Kyoto and FUFU Nara are an hour apart and designed to be done together: one night in the old imperial capital, one in the older one. The group sells it as a relay, and the pairing makes sense — Kyoto for temples and city, Nara for deer park, Great Buddha and a slower pace.
Here is what each property actually offers, how to split the nights, and how to move between them.

FUFU Kyoto: cypress baths, Higashiyama air

Every room has a cypress (hinoki) bath filled with natural hot spring water — which is unusual for a city property in Kyoto, where most hotels have a communal bath only. Interiors use wood, lacquer and lattice work, with flower arrangements that change with the season.

The restaurant, Ioto, is built on Kyoto vegetables (kyoyasai) and charcoal grilling, facing a Japanese garden. There is a bar in a detached house, and a concierge desk that will book restaurants — which matters more in Kyoto than in most cities.

Two nights is the right length: one day east (Kiyomizu-dera, Gion), one day west (Arashiyama) or north (Kinkaku-ji).

FUFU Nara: suites with open-air onsen, and Nara's herbal tradition

All rooms are suites with wood interiors and their own open-air natural hot spring bath — with the breeze from Nara Park rather than the sound of traffic. The signature here is the private medicinal herbal bath: Nara was historically the centre of traditional Eastern medicine in Japan, and the property leans into that.

Restaurant Tekisui serves kaiseki or teppanyaki, with lunch and afternoon tea available; there is a bar, a garden, and Spa by Sisley.

Two nights if you want Nara properly — Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, Nara Park, and a morning before the day-trippers arrive. One night is enough if Nara is an add-on between Kyoto and Osaka.

The relay: 4 nights, and why it works
Two nights Kyoto, two nights Nara. The distance is about an hour by road, or around 45 minutes by Kintetsu limited express between Kyoto and Kintetsu-Nara — short enough that the transfer day still has a morning and an afternoon.
The order matters slightly: Kyoto first, Nara second is the gentler sequence. Kyoto is denser and more demanding; Nara slows everything down, which is a better way to end.
How it fits a longer trip
- Tokyo 3 → Kyoto 2 → Nara 2 — the classic 8-day first trip, with a driver for the Tokyo–Kyoto leg or the Shinkansen.
- Osaka 2 → Kyoto 2 → Nara 2 — Kansai deep, for repeat visitors.
- Kyoto 2 → Nara 1 → Osaka 2 — for people who want the cities but only a taste of Nara.
Who it suits
Couples, and travellers who have already done the standard Kyoto hotels and want something quieter with a private bath. It works for older parents because both properties are compact and easy to move around.
Who it does not suit
Families with very young children — set dinners, quiet baths, and small properties. And anyone who wants a big hotel with a pool, a gym and a lobby bar: these are small resorts, and the atmosphere is deliberately still.
