The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route crosses the Northern Alps between Toyama and Nagano by a sequence of cable cars, trolley buses and a ropeway. It opens in mid-April, when the snow corridor is cut through walls up to twenty metres high, and closes in mid-November.

It is a full day, it is weather-dependent, and it is worth planning around rather than fitting in.

What the route involves

Six transport legs across the range, with the snow corridor at Murodo and the Kurobe dam as the two set pieces. You cannot drive it yourself — the transport is the point.

Practical notes

Go early: the corridor is busiest in late April and early May. Check the weather — in cloud the whole route loses its reason. Luggage forwarding between the two ends is standard.

Frequently asked questions

When is the snow wall at its highest?

Late April to mid-May, when the corridor is cut and the walls are at their peak.

Every route is built from scratch around your dates and your group — no fixed departure, no group to join. Send us your dates on WhatsApp and we will draft an itinerary, free of charge.
