Hokkaido is the Japan that does not look like Japan: wide fields, volcanic ranges, and a winter that lasts five months. It was settled late and developed with help from American agronomists, which is why Sapporo has grid streets and a frontier feel.

Distances are long and trains are sparse, so this is the region where a private car changes the most. In winter, it is close to essential.

What Hokkaido is good for

Seafood — crab, sea urchin, salmon roe — at a quality and price the rest of Japan cannot match. Then Furano and Biei’s fields in July, Daisetsuzan hiking in autumn, and powder snow in Niseko and Rusutsu from December.

Getting around

Sapporo and Otaru are easy by rail. Beyond that — Furano, Biei, the national parks — a car and driver is the practical answer, and in winter it is the safe one.
