Sapporo: winter driving is the whole question
New Chitose to central Sapporo is 40–50 minutes by car, and the train is comparable — so the car earns its place outside the city, not on the airport run.
Snow changes the rules, not just the view. From December to March, cars need studless tyres and drivers need experience; a two-wheel-drive sedan with summer tyres is genuinely dangerous on Route 230 or the road to Jozankei. We only use winter-tyred vehicles on those routes, and we build in 30% more driving time after heavy snow.
The Snow Festival dates decide hotel prices. The Sapporo Snow Festival runs for about a week in early February; hotel rates in the city centre roughly double and book out months ahead. If you are not coming for the festival, avoid that week entirely.
Seafood is a morning business. Nijo market is best before 10:00; the crab and uni that tourists photograph are gone by early afternoon. Otaru's Sankaku market is smaller and often better value.
Summer is the surprise. July and August are 22–26°C with low humidity, and Furano's flower fields peak in mid-July. That is the season locals recommend, not winter.
