Australia and New Zealand are long-haul trips, which means the hotel decision is really a routing decision: Sydney for the harbour, Melbourne for the city and the coast road, Queenstown for the mountains. Booking the hotel before the route is how people spend two days of a ten-day trip in airports.
Here are eight hotels across the three, with the area logic and how many nights each city deserves.

Sydney: harbour or city?
The Rocks / Circular Quay puts the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge outside your window — you pay for the view and you walk everywhere. Barangaroo is newer, with the same water and better restaurants. The CBD is cheaper and more practical for business.
1. Park Hyatt Sydney — The Rocks
The closest hotel to the Opera House, on the water at Campbell's Cove. If the harbour view is the point of the trip, this is the answer.
Suits: couples, special occasions. Not for: anyone who wants a big pool or a resort feel.

2. Shangri-La Sydney — The Rocks
Above Circular Quay with harbour views from the upper floors and a strong club lounge. More hotel, less boutique than the Park Hyatt.
Suits: families, anyone who wants the view plus full service. Not for: anyone wanting a design-led stay.

3. Crown Towers Sydney — Barangaroo
The newest of the three, with a pool and a spa on the harbour's edge and the best-positioned restaurants in the city downstairs. Contemporary rather than classic.
Suits: couples, families, anyone who wants pool plus harbour. Not for: anyone who wants old Sydney.

Melbourne: city lanes or river?
4. Crown Towers Melbourne — Southbank
On the Yarra at Southbank, with the casino, restaurants and shopping in the same complex. Big, full-service, and five minutes' walk across the bridge to the CBD.
Suits: families, anyone who wants facilities in one building. Not for: anyone who wants a small laneway hotel.

5. The Langham Melbourne — Southbank
On the river with a classic feel and a strong afternoon tea; quieter than Crown and closer to the arts precinct.
Suits: couples, older travellers. Not for: anyone who wants nightlife at the door.

6. Park Hyatt Melbourne — East Melbourne
Near the Fitzroy Gardens and St Patrick's Cathedral, on the quiet edge of the CBD — ten minutes' walk to the lanes and the theatre district.
Suits: couples, anyone who wants calm but central. Not for: anyone who wants river views.

Queenstown: town or lake lodge?

7. Eichardt's Private Hotel — lakefront
On the lakefront in the middle of town: small, historic, with a bar that the town uses. You walk to dinner and the lake is across the road.
Suits: couples who want to be in town. Not for: anyone wanting space, gardens or total privacy.

8. Matakauri Lodge — Lake Wakatipu, 10 minutes out
On the lake outside town with the Remarkables across the water: lodge-style, all-inclusive dining, and the quiet that Queenstown's centre does not have.
Suits: couples, honeymoons, anyone who wants the view without the town. Not for: anyone who wants to walk to bars.

How many nights
- Sydney: 3 nights — harbour and Opera House, Bondi and the coast walk, one day out to the Blue Mountains.
- Melbourne: 2–3 nights — lanes and markets, plus a day on the Great Ocean Road (a long day) or the Yarra Valley.
- Queenstown: 3–4 nights — Milford Sound is a full day, and the lakes and wine country take another.
A shape that works: Sydney 3 → Melbourne 3 (flight 1.5 h) → Queenstown 4 (flight 3 h). Ten nights, three bases, no wasted days.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sydney or Melbourne better for a first trip to Australia?
Sydney for the harbour and the icons; Melbourne for food, lanes and the coast road. Most ten-day trips do both.
How far is Queenstown from Milford Sound?
About four hours by road each way, or a long day tour with a flight option. It is a full day, not a half day.
Do we need a car in New Zealand?
For Queenstown alone, no. For a South Island route — Queenstown to Wanaka, Tekapo, Christchurch — yes, or a driver.
When is the best time to visit?
Australia: October to March for the south, and the tropical north in the dry season (May–October). New Zealand: December to March for walking, June to August for skiing.
