Where to Stay in Korea: Seoul, Busan and Jeju — 8 Hotels Compared

Korea is three separate trips for hotel purposes: Seoul is a city decision (old centre or Gangnam), Busan is a coast decision (Haeundae or the quieter east), and Jeju is a resort-island decision (Jungmun or the city). Booking the brand before choosing the district is how people end up an hour from where they wanted to be.

Here is the honest comparison across the three, with the area logic that decides each one.

Seoul: three districts, three trips

Jung-gu / Namsan Palaces, Myeongdong, old Seoul; walkable sightseeing The Shilla Seoul
Gwanghwamun Palaces and government district; central, business-friendly Four Seasons Seoul
Gangnam Modern Seoul, shopping, dining, business Park Hyatt Seoul

1. The Shilla Seoul — Jangchung-dong, Namsan

The traditional choice: a hotel in its own park on the slopes of Namsan, with a famous outdoor spa and a Korean garden. Ten minutes from Myeongdong by shuttle or taxi, but it feels removed from the city.

Suits: couples, anyone who wants calm and a garden; travellers who want the Korean grand-hotel experience. Not for: anyone who wants to walk out into the shopping streets.

2. Four Seasons Seoul — Gwanghwamun

Central, next to the palace district, with the best position for a first visit: Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon and Insadong are within reach, and the subway is underneath.

Suits: first-timers, business travellers, families. Not for: anyone who wants Gangnam's shopping on foot.

3. Park Hyatt Seoul — Gangnam

Modern, quiet, on the south side with its own garden and a strong food programme. Gangnam is about restaurants and shopping rather than palaces.

Suits: repeat visitors, couples, anyone who has done the palaces. Not for: a first visit focused on sightseeing.

4. Signiel Seoul — Jamsil

In the upper floors of Lotte World Tower: the highest hotel in Korea, with views across the whole city and the river. The view is the product.

Suits: couples, anyone who wants the skyline; families going to Lotte World. Not for: anyone who wants old Seoul at the door.

5. Park Hyatt Busan — Marine City

On the water at Marine City, with the bridge and the bay in view, ten minutes from Haeundae beach. Modern, quiet, and the best-positioned luxury hotel in the city.

Suits: couples, anyone who wants sea views and walkable Haeundae. Not for: anyone wanting the old town or Jagalchi market at the door.

6. Hilton Busan — Gijang

On the coast east of Haeundae, with a long waterfront and a resort feel. Quieter than the beach strip, further from the city.

Suits: families, anyone who wants a resort by the sea. Not for: a short trip where you want to be in Busan proper.

7. The Shilla Jeju — Jungmun

In the Jungmun resort area on the south coast, with gardens, pools and the cliff coast nearby. The classic Jeju resort stay.

Suits: families and couples who want a resort and the south coast. Not for: anyone who wants to be near Jeju airport or the city restaurants.

8. Grand Hyatt Jeju — Jeju City

In the city, near the airport, with a tower of restaurants and shopping underneath. Practical for short trips and late arrivals.

Suits: short stays, families wanting convenience, anyone driving the island from a central base. Not for: anyone who wants a beach resort.

How many nights

  • Seoul: 3 nights. One for the palaces (Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon), one for markets and food (Gwangjang, Myeongdong), one for a district like Hongdae or Seongsu.
  • Busan: 2 nights. Haeundae, Gamcheon, Jagalchi market; 3 if you add Gyeongju.
  • Jeju: 3–4 nights if you drive the island; 2 if you stay in one resort.

A shape that works: Seoul 3 → Busan 2 (KTX 2.5 hours) → Jeju 3 (flight) — or Seoul 4 → Jeju 3 for a slower trip.

Frequently asked questions

Which Seoul district is best for a first visit?

Gwanghwamun or Jung-gu — the palaces, Bukchon and the markets are all within reach. Gangnam is for repeat visitors.

Is Busan worth two nights?

Yes — Haeundae, Gamcheon and the markets need a full day and a half. Gyeongju adds a third.

Do we need a car in Jeju?

Effectively yes, or a driver for the day. The island's sights are spread around the coast and buses are slow.

Can we combine Korea with Japan?

Yes — Seoul to Fukuoka or Osaka is a short flight, and Busan to Fukuoka by ferry or flight. It works well as a two-country trip.
