Thailand has three completely different luxury trips, and picking the hotel before picking the trip is how people end up in the wrong place: a Bangkok riverside hotel is a city stay, a Chiang Mai resort is a rice-field stay, and a Phuket villa is a beach stay. They are not interchangeable, and one week cannot do all three well.
This is the honest comparison across the three destinations, with the area logic that decides each one.

Bangkok: riverside or city?
This is the only decision that matters in Bangkok. Riverside hotels have shuttle boats, sunset views and a resort calm, but you are a boat or a taxi from the shopping districts. City hotels put you next to the malls and the BTS, but you lose the river.
1. Mandarin Oriental Bangkok — Riverside
The oldest luxury hotel in the city, on the east bank of the Chao Phraya, with a shuttle boat and a literary history. Formal, traditional, and the choice if you want the Bangkok that has existed for 150 years.
Suits: couples, anyone who wants the classic hotel. Not for: travellers who want modern design.

2. The Peninsula Bangkok — Thonburi side
On the west bank, so the whole skyline faces your window. Boats across to the Oriental side and to the Skytrain pier; more resort-like than the others.
Suits: families (pool, space), anyone who wants the view. Not for: travellers who want to walk out to shops.

3. Capella Bangkok — Riverside
Smaller, quieter, suite-led, on the river with a garden feel. The most contemporary of the riverside group and the one that feels most private.
Suits: couples, anyone who wants service without a lobby crowd. Not for: anyone wanting a big-resort pool scene.
4. Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River — Riverside
A newer riverside property with a long frontage, several restaurants and a pool that faces the water. Convenient for both the river and the Silom side.
Suits: families and couples who want full service. Not for: anyone wanting old-world charm.

5. Rosewood Bangkok — Ploenchit
City hotel, not riverside: next to Central Embassy, on the Skytrain, with a design-led interior and a strong food programme. The best base if shopping and restaurants matter more than the river.
Suits: couples, food-led travellers, anyone who wants to walk to malls. Not for: anyone who wants water views.

Chiang Mai: in town or in the rice fields?
Chiang Mai has two hotel experiences: a colonial-era house inside the old city, or a resort 30 minutes out among the paddies. The second is what people picture; the first is what makes the town walkable.
6. Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai — Mae Rim
Rice paddies, water buffalo, pavilions on stilts — the classic northern resort, half an hour from the city. You come here to not leave.
Suits: couples and families who want a resort and countryside. Not for: anyone who wants to walk into Chiang Mai for dinner.

7. 137 Pillars House — Old City
A restored colonial teak house in the old town, small and central, walking distance to the temples and the Sunday market. The opposite choice to the resort.
Suits: couples, anyone who wants the town on foot. Not for: families wanting pools and space.

8. Anantara Chiang Mai Resort — Riverside
On the Ping river, close to the night market and the old city — a middle option that gives you water, a pool and walkability.
Suits: families, first-time visitors. Not for: anyone wanting total seclusion.

Phuket: which coast?
Phuket is not one beach. The west coast is sunset and surf (Surin, Pansea, Bang Tao); the south is sheltered and quieter (Cape Panwa); the east is mangrove and boats to Phang Nga. Choosing the beach is the whole decision.
9. Amanpuri — Pansea Beach
Aman's first property, on its own headland and beach, pavilions in the palms. The most private of the Phuket options and the least "hotel".
Suits: couples, honeymoons, anyone who wants quiet. Not for: anyone who wants bars and shopping nearby.

10. Trisara — north-west coast
Private bay, pool villas, one of the best-known resort restaurants in Thailand. Larger villas than Amanpuri and better for families.
Suits: families and couples who want a villa. Not for: anyone on a short trip — the drive is 25 minutes from the airport.

11. Rosewood Phuket — Emerald Bay
On a small bay on the west coast, with a long pool and a design-led feel. Between Trisara's privacy and a full-service resort.
Suits: couples and families. Not for: anyone wanting to walk to a town.

How many nights
- Bangkok: 2–3 nights. Two is enough for the temples, the river and one good dinner; three if you add a day trip to Ayutthaya.
- Chiang Mai: 2–3 nights. Three if you want the Elephant Nature Park or a cooking day.
- Phuket: 4–5 nights. Anything less and the flight is not worth it.
A shape that works: Bangkok 2 → Chiang Mai 3 → Phuket 4. Or skip the north entirely: Bangkok 2 → Phuket 5.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bangkok or Chiang Mai better for a first trip to Thailand?
Bangkok for the city and the river; Chiang Mai for the north, temples and food. Most first trips do both, two nights and three nights.
Which Phuket beach is best?
Pansea and Surin for quiet and sunsets; Bang Tao for a mix of resorts and restaurants; Cape Panwa for shelter and privacy.
Do we need a car in Thailand?
In Bangkok, no — boats and the Skytrain beat traffic. In Chiang Mai and Phuket, a driver for day trips is worth it; self-driving is not advisable.
When is the best time to visit?
November to February for dry, cooler weather across all three. Phuket's west coast is wettest from May to October.
