ORIX Hotels Japan: Karaku, Hanaori, CROSS and the Ryokan Collection

ORIX Hotels & Resorts is not one brand — it is five, and they serve completely different trips. Karaku is design-led onsen; Hanaori is a lakeside family ryokan-hotel; CROSS is a city hotel for shoppers; CROSS Life is a business-friendly base in Fukuoka; and the Ryokan Collection is old-school hot-spring inns in places most tour itineraries never reach.

If you are booking one of them for a private trip, this is the map: what each brand is for, where the properties are, and which one fits the route you are actually planning.

The brand families

Karaku Atami Izusan · Hakone Gora Design-led onsen hotels; the most "bookable" of the group for couples
Hanaori Hakone Ashinoko Lakeside hotel with onsen; good for families and first-timers
Ryokan Collection Hakodate Yunokawa (Bansou) · Aizu Higashiyama (Onyado Toho) · Kurobe/Unazuki (Yamanoha) Traditional inns in regional onsen towns
CROSS HOTEL Sapporo · Kyoto · Osaka City hotels in the middle of the shopping and dining districts
CROSS Life Hakata Tenjin · Hakata Yanagibashi Fukuoka city base
CROSS Suites Tokyo Asakusa Apartment-style city stay
Group hotels Beppu Onsen Suginoi · Hotel Universal Port (Osaka) Large onsen resort; USJ-side city hotel

If you want one onsen night near Tokyo

Hakone Gora Karaku — the water garden and timber facade at the entrance, Gora, Hakone

Hakone. Two options, different jobs: Hakone Gora Karaku for a design-forward stay in the Gora area, and Hakone Ashinoko Hanaori for the lake — the latter is easier with children and has the water view.

Hakone is the default single-night escape from Tokyo because the train does it in 90 minutes. If you want the sea instead of the mountain, Atami Izusan Karaku is on the Shinkansen line, around 50 minutes from Tokyo.

If you are going to Kyushu

Beppu Onsen Suginoi Hotel is the big one: Beppu produces more hot spring water than anywhere in Japan, and Suginoi is the large resort on the hill above it, with multiple bathing areas and a view down to the bay.

For the cities, CROSS Life Hakata (Tenjin or Yanagibashi) puts you in the middle of Fukuoka's food district — Tenjin for shopping and nightlife, Yanagibashi for the market side.

If you want somewhere most tours do not go

The Ryokan Collection is the interesting part of this group. Unazuki Onsen in the Kurobe valley is the gateway to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route — one of Japan's great mountain journeys, open roughly April to November. Aizu Higashiyama Onsen is old samurai country in Fukushima. Yunokawa in Hakodate is a classic Hokkaido onsen district with the morning market ten minutes away.

These are not luxury names, but they are the right bases for regions where the alternative is a business hotel.

If you are city-hopping

CROSS HOTEL Kyoto and Osaka are positioned for shopping and eating rather than temples and gardens — Shinsaibashi in Osaka, and central Kyoto. They are a sensible mid-tier choice when the hotel is a bed and the city is the point.

Cross Hotel Sapporo works for a Susukino-based Sapporo stay; CROSS Suites Tokyo Asakusa suits families who want space and a quieter part of Tokyo.

How to use this group in a private itinerary

  • Tokyo + Hakone (4 nights): city hotel in Tokyo, one or two nights at Karaku Gora or Hanaori Ashi noko.
  • Kansai (5 nights): CROSS Osaka → CROSS Kyoto, with a driver for Nara and Arashiyama.
  • Kyushu (6 nights): CROSS Life Hakata → Beppu Suginoi → back to Fukuoka.
  • Alpine route (add-on): Unazuki Onsen Yamanoha, then the Tateyama Kurobe route by cable car and bus.

Frequently asked questions

Is ORIX Hotels & Resorts a luxury group?

It is upper-mid rather than ultra-luxury. Karaku is the design-led brand; the ryokan collection is traditional; CROSS is a city hotel brand.

Which is the best ORIX property for a first trip?

Hakone Ashinoko Hanaori for a lake view with onsen, or Hakone Gora Karaku for a design-led stay — both are one night from Tokyo.

Can ORIX hotels be part of a private tour?

Yes. They work well as the mid-tier nights on a route, where a ryokan would be too rigid and a city hotel too plain.

Do they have onsen?

Karaku, Hanaori, the ryokan collection and Suginoi all have hot springs. CROSS hotels are city hotels.
