KAI Nagato (界 長門) sits in Nagato Yumoto Onsen, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on the river — perfectly located for riverside walks and excursions into the historic onsen town. It is a 40-room ryokan with an occupancy of 1 to 4 guests, and the town around it has been rebuilt with a rare amount of care.

Where KAI Nagato is
The address is 2229-1 Fukawayumoto, Nagato, Yamaguchi 759-4103 — in the Otozure River valley in western Yamaguchi, near the Japan Sea coast. Nagato Yumoto is a small onsen town with a history going back centuries, and its riverside has been redeveloped as a walkable promenade with foot baths and small shops.

Getting there
By train
About 15 minutes on foot from JR Nagato-Yumoto Station — an unusually walkable arrival for a ryokan of this kind, and the reason many guests come without a car.
From JR Shin-Yamaguchi Station (on the Sanyo Shinkansen) there is a jumbo taxi service through to Nagato-Yumoto Onsen, which covers the last leg without a train change.
By car
By road, the nearest expressway access is from Mine Interchange. The property recommends winter tyres in winter — this is the Japan Sea side of Yamaguchi and it does get cold and wet.

The town, not just the ryokan
Nagato Yumoto's revival is one of the more thoughtful small-town regeneration projects in Japan: the riverside was re-laid as a pedestrian route, the onsen town's older buildings were restored rather than replaced, and a sake brewery and small cafés sit along the water. Staying here means the town is part of the stay rather than a backdrop.

The onsen, the lounge and dinner
The open-air bath is stone-lined, set with a small rock garden and a maple tree; in the evening the light in the basin turns amber and the town goes quiet. Bathing here is unhurried — this is a ryokan you arrive early for, rather than one where the onsen is a box to tick.

Indoors, the lounge is low seating facing floor-to-ceiling windows over the tiled rooftops and cherry trees of Nagato Yumoto. Dinner is served at set tables, with local sake and Yamaguchi produce — the Japan Sea coast of the prefecture is the fish, and the town's own brewery does the rest.

Yamaguchi and the west
Western Yamaguchi is one of the least-visited and most rewarding parts of Honshu — Hagi with its castle town and pottery, the Akiyoshidai karst plateau and Akiyoshido cave, and the coast towards Shimonoseki. The Sanyo Shinkansen at Shin-Yamaguchi puts the rest of Japan within reach.
