KAI Izumo (界 出雲) stands at Hinomisaki, on the Shimane coast in a region steeped in Japanese mythology — the land of the Izumo cycle, where the gods are said to have gathered. Its rooms look out over the sea at sunset, twilight and dawn, and its baths face scenic shallows dotted with tiny islands.

Where KAI Izumo is
The address is 604 Hinomisaki, Taisha-cho, Izumo, Shimane. Hinomisaki is the cape at the western end of the Izumo peninsula, crowned by the white Hinomisaki Lighthouse — Japan's tallest, and a landmark you can see from the water. The ryokan has 39 rooms with an occupancy of 1 to 6 guests, which makes it comfortable for families as well as couples.

Getting there
By bus from Izumoshi Station
Take the Ichibata Bus from JR Izumoshi Station and get off at the Hinomisaki Lighthouse bus stop. This is the standard route for guests arriving by rail, and the bus runs down the coast to the cape.
By car
From the Izumo Interchange on the Sanin Expressway. The property notes that winter tyres are recommended in winter — this is the Japan Sea coast, and the weather here is genuinely wintery from December.

The water and the view
The baths are fed by chloride-rich hot spring water — the salt-heavy kind found on the Japan Sea coast, which holds heat well and is traditionally regarded as warming rather than stimulating. They face the shallows, with small islands breaking the surface, and the rooms share the same westward orientation: this is a property built for watching the light change over the sea.

Izumo and the mythic landscape
This is one of the most culturally loaded corners of Japan. Izumo Taisha, one of the country's oldest and most important shrines, is a short drive inland; the Inasanohama beach nearby is where, in the mythology, the gods gather in the tenth month. The Shimane coast also has the Izumo Science Museum and the sunset spots that give Hinomisaki its name — hi-no-misaki, the cape of the sun.
