KAI Beppu: A Contemporary Ryokan in Japan's Onsen Capital

KAI Beppu: A Contemporary Ryokan in Japan's Onsen Capital

KAI Beppu (界 別府) is in the Kitahama district of Beppu, Oita Prefecture — a city that produces more hot-spring water than anywhere else in Japan. The ryokan offers a contemporary spin on the lively traditional Beppu hot spring experience: this is not a remote mountain retreat, it is a 68-room property in the middle of an onsen city.

Where KAI Beppu is

The address is 2-14-29 Kitahama, Beppu, Oita 874-0920 — the Kitahama area of central Beppu, on the waterfront. Rooms take 1 to 4 guests across 68 rooms, one of the larger KAI properties, which means it also works for travellers who want a city base rather than a secluded one.

Getting there

By bus from Oita Airport

From Oita Airport, board the airport limited express bus (approximately 50 minutes) and get off at the Beppu Kitahama bus stop — which is essentially at the door. This is the simplest arrival of any KAI property in Kyushu: no taxi leg required.

By car

From the Beppu Interchange on the expressway. An exclusive car-rental discount is available, and a car makes it easy to reach Beppu's famous jigoku — the "hells", the steaming coloured pools that are the city's other signature.

The Beppu idea

Beppu is not a quiet onsen town; it is a working hot-spring city, and the local bathing culture is loud, social and varied. KAI Beppu's approach is to interpret that contemporary rather than traditional — clean lines and modern comfort, sitting inside a city whose relationship with hot water goes back centuries.

The building leans into that idea rather than away from it. A foot bath looks out over Beppu Bay, there are basins for soaking just your hands, and in the evening a band plays on bath bowls and stools while stalls serve shochu — the nightlife of old Beppu, staged indoors.

Beppu and beyond

Beppu sits in Oita Prefecture on Kyushu's east coast, close to Yufuin inland and within reach of Kumamoto and Aso across the island. The city's hot-spring "hells", the Beppu Ropeway up Mount Tsurumi, and the steam rising from the streets are all part of the reason it draws more visitors than any other onsen destination in Japan.
