KAI Miyajima: How to Reach the Ryokan Facing Itsukushima

KAI Miyajima (界 宮島) looks across the water to Miyajima and its Itsukushima Shrine — the island whose floating torii is one of the most photographed structures in Japan. It is the largest KAI property of this group at 54 rooms, taking 1 to 6 guests, so it also works for larger families travelling together.

Where it is, and how it is reached

The ryokan sits on the mainland side of the Miyajima channel in Hiroshima Prefecture. Two things make the approach distinctive: you can arrive by road, or — unusually — the property lists arrival by passenger ship, coming in across the water rather than by car.

Getting there

By car

About 10 minutes from Ono Interchange on the Sanyo Expressway — one of the shortest final legs of any KAI property, which makes KAI Miyajima easy to fold into a Sanyo route between Hiroshima and the Shimanami Kaido.

Shuttle and rental cars

The ryokan offers an exclusive discount on car rental for guests arriving by road. If you are coming by rail to Hiroshima or Miyajimaguchi, plan the transfer in advance — the last leg is short but not walkable with luggage.

The baths — the reason to choose this one

The bath hall is on the top floor, with outdoor baths designed so that they appear to connect seamlessly to the sea. That is the signature of this property: you are not looking at a garden or a mountain from the water, you are looking at the Seto Inland Sea, with Miyajima across it.

Rooms are Japanese-style, with categories that include a private open-air bath. In a 1-to-6-occupancy property, the larger categories suit families well.

Why Miyajima

Itsukushima Shrine and its torii are a short crossing away, and the island is worth more than the photograph — the Omotesando shopping street, the ropeway up Mount Misen, and the deer that wander the waterfront. Staying on the Hiroshima side and crossing over lets you see the torii at both high and low tide, which is the difference between the famous image and a walk out to the gate itself.
