KAI Aso (界 阿蘇) is not a hotel building. It is twelve detached villas, each with its own outdoor hot-spring bath, scattered across a grassy plateau inside Aso Kuju National Park — on the rim of a volcanic caldera, with pasture and horses in front of you. It is the smallest and most unusual property in Hoshino Resorts' KAI collection, and getting there is the part most guests ask about, because it sits in the mountains of Kokonoe, Oita Prefecture — between Aso and Yufuin, not in either town.
This guide covers how to reach it from Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Oita, and what the stay actually looks like.

Where KAI Aso actually is
The address is 628-6 Senomoto, Tsubo, Kokonoe-machi, Kusu-gun, Oita Prefecture (大分県玖珠郡九重町湯坪瀬の本628-6). The property sits on the Yamanami Highway (Prefectural Road 11) — the scenic ridge road that runs between Beppu/Yufuin and Aso. That location is the whole point: open grassland, the caldera, and volcanic steam, with no town in sight. It also means you must plan the last leg, because there is no station at the door.

Getting there
From Fukuoka by train
Take the Kyushu Shinkansen Sakura from JR Hakata Station to JR Kurume Station — about 15 minutes. Change to the JR Kyudai Main Line to JR Bungo-Nakamura Station — roughly 105 minutes — and from there it is about 40 minutes by taxi to the property. This is the standard rail route, and the taxi leg is not optional.
By car — the easier option
From the Fukuoka direction: take the Oita Expressway to Kokonoe Interchange, then approximately 60 minutes on Prefectural Road 11 (Yamanami Highway), and the final stretch is about 15 minutes to KAI Aso. From the Oita direction you come in via the same highway from the Beppu/Yufuin side.
We usually recommend a car for KAI Aso over any other KAI property. The road itself — the Yamanami Highway across the caldera — is one of the best drives in Kyushu, and having a car lets you combine the stay with Mount Aso, the Kuju mountains and Yufuin in one loop.

By plane
Kumamoto Airport: about 70 minutes by car.
Fukuoka Airport: about 120 minutes by car.
By bus
Route buses run from JR Beppu Station and JR Yufuin Station (Sanko Bus / Kyushu Odan Bus) — a slower option if you are not driving.

What the stay is like
Twelve villas, all detached, each with a private outdoor bath on a wooden deck facing the trees. The baths are fed from two volcanic hot-spring sources on the property, and the water is notably soft on the skin. Room capacity is 1 to 4 guests.

Facilities are deliberately minimal: one restaurant, one café/lounge, and the onsen. Wi-Fi is free in all areas, and children up to 6 years old may share a bed.

Beyond the room, the property runs what it calls a caldera bar — an evening programme about the caldera and the landscape that produced it, with original drinks such as a shochu mojito. In the morning and through the day, the plateau in front of the villas is grazing pasture, which is why guests so often describe the stay in terms of grass, sky and horses rather than architecture.

Autumn and the Kuju plateau
The Kuju highlands turn early — the pampas grass (susuki) on the plateau is the signature autumn sight, well before the maples in the towns below. Because the villas are single-storey and spread out, autumn and early winter are the seasons when the setting reads most clearly.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a car to reach KAI Aso?
Not strictly — the rail route via Hakata, Kurume and Bungo-Nakamura works, but it ends with about 40 minutes by taxi. A car makes the trip far easier and lets you combine the stay with Mount Aso and Yufuin.
Which airport is closest to KAI Aso?
Kumamoto Airport, about 70 minutes by car. Fukuoka Airport is about 120 minutes by car.
How many guests can stay?
The property has twelve detached villas, each sleeping 1 to 4 guests. Every villa has its own outdoor hot-spring bath.
Is KAI Aso suitable for a Kyushu driving itinerary?
It is one of the best properties in Kyushu for it. Sitting on the Yamanami Highway, it links naturally into a loop with Mount Aso, the Kuju mountains and Yufuin.
Planning a Kyushu trip around it
KAI Aso is not a stop you bolt onto a city break — it works best as the quiet middle of a Kyushu driving route, or as a two-night reset between Mount Aso and Yufuin. Every itinerary we build is designed from scratch around your dates, your group and how much you want to drive. There is no fixed departure and no group to join: have a Kyushu itinerary designed for you — free, no obligation.
We plan private journeys for travellers worldwide, in any destination. Nothing about our trips is off-the-shelf.
