KAI Yufuin (界 由布院) stands between Mount Yufu and a slope of terraced rice fields in Oita Prefecture — 45 rooms looking out over what is often called the original Japanese landscape, where the paddies change with the farming calendar. It is a hot-spring ryokan first: Yufuin is one of Japan's richest hot-spring areas by both volume and number of sources, and the outdoor baths here are built to look out across the open sky and the mountain.
The one thing that decides whether your stay runs smoothly is the transfer, so this guide leads with that.

The free station shuttle — book it, don't assume it
KAI Yufuin runs a free shuttle between JR Yufuin Station and the property. It is not a turn-up-and-ride service: reservations are required.
Pick-up departs from the Tourist Center next to Yufuin Station at 2:00 PM, 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Return departures from KAI Yufuin leave at 8:30 AM, 9:15 AM, 10:00 AM, 10:15 AM and 11:00 AM.
The practical consequence: your arrival day is governed by those four afternoon slots, and your departure day by the morning ones. If you are coming from Fukuoka or Oita by bus, we suggest fixing the shuttle time first and choosing the bus that matches — not the other way round.

Getting there
By train
Yufuin is served by JR Yufuin Station. From the station it is about 10 minutes by taxi to the property, or take the free shuttle above. The scenic approach is the Yufuin no Mori limited express from Hakata, one of Kyushu's best-known rail journeys.
By plane
Oita Airport: about 60 minutes by car, or an express bus in about 55 minutes (Oita Kotsu / Kamenoi Bus) to Yufuin Station, then 10 minutes by taxi.
Fukuoka Airport: an express bus runs from Fukuoka Airport International to Yufuin Station.
By car
From the Oita Expressway, Yufuin Interchange it is about 15 minutes. For navigation, use the mapcode 269 417 086*82 — the property notes that searching by phone number does not display correctly, and that the surrounding area is mountainous, so do not rely on arriving after dark on a first visit.

The baths and the view
KAI Yufuin has two onsen areas, plus a spa and two cafés/lounges and a restaurant. The signature experience is the outdoor bath: open sky above, Mount Yufu ahead, and the soft water that Yufuin is known for. Because the ryokan looks over terraced paddies rather than a town, the landscape itself changes through the year — flooded fields in spring, green in summer, gold before harvest.
Rooms take 1 to 4 guests, Wi-Fi is free throughout, and children up to 6 years old may share a bed.

Beyond the ryokan
Yufuin itself is a walkable onsen town — the lake, the lanes of small shops and galleries, and the mountain trailheads are all within reach. Combined with the railway, it makes one of the most comfortable anchors in Kyushu: you can arrive without a car, stay two nights, and use the town on foot.
