FUFU Nikko or Ritz-Carlton Nikko? Where Each Sits, and How Many Nights

Nikko now has two very different luxury options: FUFU Nikko in the Tamozawa area near the shrines, and The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko up at Lake Chuzenji. They are 40 minutes apart on the same mountain road, and choosing between them decides the shape of your whole stay.

This is the comparison that matters: where each sits, what you do from each, and how many nights.

The two locations

Tamozawa is close to what most people come to Nikko for: Toshogu shrine, the cedar avenue, the old imperial villa, the Kanmangafuchi abyss. You are ten minutes from the World Heritage site, and the road up the mountain is an option rather than a necessity.

Lake Chuzenji is 1,270 m up, past the switchbacks, and the reward is the lake, Kegon Falls, and cool air in summer. You are away from the crowds — and away from the shrines.

What FUFU Nikko is

All rooms are suites with a private hot spring bath from the Tamozawa source, in a wooded setting above a river. Restaurant Setchu sits on the riverbank and serves kaiseki or teppanyaki — the teppanyaki counter, Kou, is inside the restaurant and is the reason some guests book here rather than at the lake.

The feel is quieter and more ryokan-like than a hotel: set dinners, private baths, forest.

What the Ritz-Carlton gives you

Lake views, the brand's first natural onsen anywhere — sourced from Yumoto — and a base for the lake, the falls and the Okunikko marshes. It is a hotel with a lobby and a bar rather than an inn; better for travellers who want service infrastructure and English-language familiarity.

Which to choose

  • First visit, mainly for the shrines → FUFU Nikko. You are minutes away and the dinners are the point.
  • Mainly for the lake and the mountain → Ritz-Carlton Nikko. Two nights minimum because of the drive.
  • Two nights, want both → stay at the lake and drive down to the shrines early one morning, or stay at Tamozawa and spend one day up the mountain.
  • Autumn colour → the lake side is where the colour is, but the Irohazaka becomes a queue; a driver matters more than the hotel.

How many nights

Two nights, whichever you choose. One night means arriving, dinner, sleep, breakfast, out — and Nikko rewards the second morning, when the shrine crowds have not arrived and the lake is still.

Three if you want the shrines, the lake and a walk on the Senjogahara marsh.

Getting there

Tobu line from Asakusa to Tobu-Nikko, then a bus or car; or about two to two and a half hours from central Tokyo by car. Whichever property you choose, a car with a driver is what makes the mountain road and the shrines work in one day — the public bus up the Irohazaka is the variable nobody plans for.

Frequently asked questions

FUFU Nikko or Ritz-Carlton Nikko — which is better?

Neither. FUFU is closer to the shrines with private in-room hot springs and set dinners; the Ritz-Carlton is on Lake Chuzenji with lake views and the brand's first onsen.

How far apart are they?

About 40 minutes by road, up the Irohazaka mountain road.

Do all FUFU Nikko rooms have private hot springs?

Yes — all rooms are suites with a private hot spring bath from the Tamozawa source.

How many nights do we need in Nikko?

Two. One night does not give you a second morning, which is the best part.
