Choosing Your Shikoku Tour Length

Six days in Shikoku gives a private tour a comfortable middle rhythm: enough time to move between Kagawa's gardens and coastline without rushing, and enough slack to slow down where a place holds your attention. The five-day version keeps to the main stops, while the seven- and eight-day versions add more places and a more relaxed pace. On this itinerary you can spend an unhurried morning at Ritsurin Garden, the strolling garden completed in 1745, climb the stone steps of Kotohira-gu Shrine at your own speed, and time a visit to Chichibugahama Beach when the light is right. Mt. Shiude and Takaya Shrine are easier to include with a private vehicle. Six days suits travellers who want several stops without a fixed coach schedule.

Tourist Attractions

Ritsurin Garden, a feudal strolling garden over 100 years in the making, was finally completed in 1745. Designated a “Special Place of Scenic Beauty”, Ritsurin Garden is recognized as a national treasure.

Mt. Shiude - From the observation deck at the summit, you can enjoy a panoramic view of numerous islands in the Seto Inland Sea.

Chichibugahama Beach - Comparable to the view of the Sky Mirror of Uyuni Salt Lake, Kagawa Prefecture’s most popular photography spot

Takaya Shrine - The main shrine’s torii gate, the “Sky Torii Gate,” is famous far and wide, and was selected as one of the Eighty-Eight Scenic Spots of Shikoku in 2018.

Sanuki Manno Park - Spectacular view of flowers in Shikoku! A national park where you can enjoy seasonal flowers throughout the year.

Shikoku Aquarium Located in Kagawa Prefecture, the gateway to Shikoku, this aquarium has the theme of “Shikoku aquascape.”

Kotohira-gu Shrine - The god of the sea has been popularly known as "Konpira-san" since ancient times. The approach is famous for its long stone steps, with 785 steps from the entrance to the main shrine and 1,368 steps to the inner shrine.

The Niyodo River is often praised as the most beautiful river in Japan. The water is clear and has a mysterious and dreamy cobalt-blue color. People call this blue "Niyodo Blue".

Vine Bridge in the Iya Valley is known as one of Japan's three strange bridges.

Oboke-Koboke is an approximately 8km-long valley created by the torrents of the Yoshino River that crossed the Shikoku Mountains over 200 million years and boasts a beautiful landscape that looks like a towering marble sculpture.

Minamimachi-dori, the town of indigo trade that has prospered since the mid-Edo period, has been prosperous due to silkworm cocoons. Rows of houses are "Udatsu ", symbolizing the wealthy merchants of the past. This streetscape was selected as an important preservation area for traditional buildings in Japan.

The Awa Sand Pillars are said to be one of the ``three greatest wonders of the world,'' along with the earthen pillars of the Rocky Mountains in the United States and the Tyrol region of Italy.

Naruto Whirlpool - Among the three major whirlpools in the world, the one where you can see whirlpools up to 20 meters in diameter is the "Naruto Strait".

Shikoku Tour Length: Common Questions

Why choose six days rather than the five-day version?

The five-day tour covers the core stops; six days keeps those and adds room elsewhere. It allows Mt. Shiude and Takaya Shrine alongside Ritsurin Garden, and lets you wait for suitable light at Chichibugahama Beach rather than moving on. Travellers who prefer a little slack in each day often choose this length.

What would a seven- or eight-day tour add?

The seven- and eight-day versions add more places and a more relaxed pace. With extra days, stops such as Sanuki Manno Park or the Niyodo River can sit in the plan without pushing anything out, and each day holds fewer transfers. Eight days suits travellers who like a slower rhythm.

Who does six days suit?

It suits travellers who want more than a short break but still prefer a defined shape to the trip. Couples, families and small groups travelling by private vehicle, with a flexible start to each morning and time for gardens, shrines and coastal viewpoints, tend to find this length comfortable.
