Madrid Private Tour: Prado, Toledo and Segovia

Madrid is the base that makes the best of Castile reachable: Toledo, Segovia and El Escorial are all inside 90 minutes, and none of them is convenient by train with a family.

Charter or private tour

Charter: car and driver, your stops. Private tour: adds a guide for the Prado, where the paintings need explaining.

Drive times

  • Barajas Airport to the centre: about 30 minutes.
  • Madrid to Toledo: about 1 hour.
  • Madrid to Segovia (aqueduct, Alcazar): about 1 hour 15 minutes.
  • Madrid to El Escorial: about 1 hour.

Three days that work

Madrid, 1 day: Prado in the morning, Retiro park, Plaza Mayor, a late dinner.
Toledo, 1 day: cathedral, Jewish quarter, El Greco, the sword workshops.
Segovia, 1 day: aqueduct, Alcazar, a suckling pig lunch.

Season

April to June and September to October. July and August are very hot — Madrid sits at 650 m and bakes. Winter is cold but the museums are quiet.

Practical notes

Madrid's centre is walkable; a car in the old quarter is a liability. We use it for day trips and airport runs. Toledo and Segovia both restrict traffic inside the walls, so drop-offs are outside the gates.

FAQ

Toledo or Segovia? Toledo for three cultures and El Greco; Segovia for the aqueduct and the Alcazar.

Do we need a guide at the Prado? It turns three hours of paintings into a narrative; worth it.

Can we do Toledo in half a day? Two hours of driving plus three hours there; a full day is calmer.

Is a car useful in Madrid? No, metro and walking beat it.

Can you pick up at Barajas? Yes, airport pickup is standard.
