Collection: ASIAN RESTAURANTS
Where you eat decides how the day feels. In Asia the difference between a good trip and a memorable one is rarely the hotel — it is whether lunch was at the famous place with a queue, or at the counter where the family has cooked the same dish for forty years.
We plan meals as part of the route, not as an afterthought: a fish market breakfast before the drive, a noodle shop at the hour locals eat, dinner within walking distance of the hotel at the end of a long day.
How we place meals in an itinerary
By geography and by hour, above all. A three-hour kaiseki is wonderful on a slow evening and impossible on a day with a train to catch. A sushi breakfast is worth restructuring a morning for. When the meal deserves it, we build the day around the meal.
Booking realities
The best small restaurants in Japan often take reservations by telephone, in Japanese, one month out; some accept only hotel concierge calls. In China the famous houses need booking further ahead than travellers expect. Where we can secure a table we do. Where a place takes no bookings at all, we say so and plan the queue into the morning.
By cuisine and by city
Japan has its own collections by city — Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, Nagoya and Fukuoka — because eating well in Japan is a city-by-city affair. Chinese dining is collected separately and covers the regional traditions from Cantonese to Sichuan.
Tell us your dates and what you like to eat — we will build the days around it.
