Thailand Private Tour and Charter: Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the Islands
Thailand is the easiest country in Asia to do privately and the easiest to do badly. The difference is usually the driving: Bangkok's traffic, the four-hour road north to Chiang Mai, the islands where the last ferry leaves at three. A car and driver turns all three from problems into time you spend somewhere better.
包車 — charter
A charter is a vehicle and driver, day by day. It suits Bangkok's outskirts (the floating market, Ayutthaya, the old capital at Sukhothai), Hua Hin down the coast, and Chiang Mai's mountain loop to Doi Inthanon and the hill-tribe villages.
包團 — private tour
A private tour plans the whole thing: hotels on the river or in the old city, the internal flights, restaurant bookings and a guide where the detail matters — a market walk, a cooking morning, the temple circuits that need someone to explain what you are looking at.
Routes that work
- 5 days: Bangkok with Ayutthaya by car, then Hua Hin or Kanchanaburi.
- 7 days: Bangkok → flight to Chiang Mai → three nights in the north with a car and driver.
- 10 days: add three nights on an island in the Andaman or the Gulf, with transfers arranged.
Getting around
Domestic flights connect Bangkok to Chiang Mai in about an hour and to Phuket in about an hour and twenty. Bangkok to Hua Hin is roughly three hours by road, Bangkok to Ayutthaya about an hour and a half outside peak traffic. Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai is roughly three hours.
When to come
November to February is cool and dry and the busiest. March to May is hot. The monsoon runs June to October on the Andaman coast and later on the Gulf side, which is why the two coasts are sold in different seasons.
Frequently asked questions
Is a private car worth it in Bangkok?
For day trips out of the city, yes. Inside the city, the Skytrain and river boats are faster, so we usually start the car when you leave the centre.
Can we combine Bangkok and the islands?
Yes — a flight south and a hotel transfer, with the car meeting you at the airport. It is the standard one-week shape.
Do we need a guide as well as a driver?
Not every day. Guides matter at the temple complexes and the markets; drivers matter on the long roads. Most parties book two or three guided days and drive the rest.
How far is Chiang Mai from Bangkok?
About an hour by air, or a long day by road. Almost everyone flies and picks up a car at the northern end.
Can you arrange island transfers?
Yes, including the boat legs and the timing around the last ferry, which is where most independent itineraries fall apart.
