Switzerland Private Tour and Charter: Alps, Lakes and Scenic Rail

Switzerland is small, expensive and almost entirely vertical. The trains are the best in Europe and the scenery is at the end of them; a car fills the gaps the timetable leaves — the mountain roads, the valley villages, the passes that close in winter.

包車 — charter, car and driver

A charter suits the days between the scenic trains: Lucerne and Mount Rigi, Interlaken and the Lauterbrunnen valley, Zermatt's access road at Täsch, Appenzell's back roads. It also handles the one thing Swiss travel does badly — luggage between two hotels with a cable car in the middle.

包團 — private tour, the route planned too

A private tour adds the hotels that need booking six months out, the rail reservations (Glacier Express, Bernina Express), and the order that keeps you on the sunny side of the Alps when the forecast turns.

Routes that work

  • 7 days: Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken and the Jungfrau region, out from Geneva.
  • 10 days: add Zermatt and the Glacier Express to St Moritz, then the Bernina line to Italy.
  • 12 days: the same plus Lake Geneva, Montreux and the Lavaux vineyards.

Getting around

Zurich to Lucerne is about an hour by road or forty minutes by train. Lucerne to Interlaken roughly an hour and a half. Interlaken to Zermatt about two and a half hours, with the last leg by shuttle train from Täsch. The Glacier Express takes about eight hours and is the point, not the transport.

When to come

June to September for the passes and the walking; late September for clear air and fewer people. Winter is ski season, when some mountain roads close and the trains matter more than the car.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a car in Switzerland?

Not for the classic rail route. A car helps for the valleys, the smaller passes and the villages the trains skip.

Can we drive to Zermatt?

No — Zermatt is car-free. You park at Täsch and take the shuttle train, which is why the luggage question matters here more than anywhere.

Is the Glacier Express worth it?

For the scenery, yes. It is a long day and slow by design; many people prefer the Bernina line, which is shorter and just as beautiful.

When do the mountain passes open?

The high passes generally open June to October, weather depending. A driver planning your route will avoid the ones that close rather than gamble on them.

How expensive is it really?

Switzerland is expensive on food, hotels and transport. Planning around it — a rail pass, the right nights in the right villages — does more for the budget than chasing cheaper hotels.
