Xinjiang is bigger than most countries, and the two halves are not variations of each other. North is grassland, lakes and pine forest at altitude — Kanas, Hemu, the Tian Shan pastures. South is desert, oasis towns and the old Silk Road cities — Kashgar, Turpan, the Taklamakan edge. They share a name and a border, not a landscape.
Most people can do one properly, or both badly. Here is how to tell which half you actually want, and how many days each one needs.

North Xinjiang: lakes, grass, altitude
Urumqi in, then north to Kanas Lake and Hemu village, often with Burqin and the Irtysh river on the way. This is the half that photographs well in autumn: larch and birch turning yellow against dark water, cold nights, long drives between valleys.

The season is short and specific. Late September to early October is the colour; June to August is green and busy with domestic tourism; winter is remote and half-closed.

Distances are real: Urumqi to Kanas is around 700 km, most of it on roads that look straight and take all day. A six or seven day trip in the north is normal; five days means choosing between Hemu and Kanas rather than doing both.

South Xinjiang: oases, desert, old cities
Kashgar is the anchor — the Id Kah mosque, the Sunday livestock market, the old town lanes. Then Turpan with its karez irrigation channels and the Flaming Mountains, and the desert routes toward Hotan if you have the days.

The season runs longer and the driving is different: long straight roads across gravel desert, oasis towns every few hours, heat in July and August that changes what you can do in the afternoon.

Kashgar deserves two full days, not one. Turpan needs one and a half. Add the transfers and a southern route is five to seven days.

The mistake: trying to do both in one trip
Urumqi to Kashgar is over 1,400 km — a two-hour flight or a very long drive. A trip that tries to cover Kanas, Turpan and Kashgar in eight days spends a third of it in transit and sees each place at its worst hour.

If you genuinely want both halves, ten to twelve days is the honest number, including an internal flight. If you have eight days, pick one half and go deeper.
Which half for which traveller

| North | Scenery, photography, cool summer, autumn colour. Good with older children. Long drives, simple hotels in villages. |
| South | Culture, markets, food, history. Better for adults and photographers of people rather than landscapes. Hot in summer. |

Practical things that decide the trip
- Permits — some border areas need them; they are arranged in advance, not at the checkpoint.
- Altitude — the north sits high; Kanas is around 1,400 m and the passes higher.
- Internal flights — Urumqi to Kashgar or Altay saves two days. Worth it.
- Language — Mandarin works in the cities, Uyghur in Kashgar's old town; a guide is genuinely useful here, more than in Japan.
- Distance honesty — ask any operator for the driving hours per day, not the kilometres.

Frequently asked questions
Is Xinjiang safe for foreign travellers?
Travel in the main tourist areas is straightforward; security checks are frequent and ID is required. We plan around the areas and hours that work, and we tell you what to expect rather than pretend it is unremarkable.
North or south for a first visit?
North for scenery and photography, south for cities and culture. If you have eight days, choose one.
How many days do we need?
Six to seven for one half, ten to twelve for both with an internal flight.
When should we go?
North: late September for autumn colour, June to August for green. South: April to June and September to October; avoid the July–August heat.
