YAKINIKU - Robata no Karisuma (ロバタノカリスマ小倉店 / Robata no Karisuma Kokura-ten) is a robata-yaki and yakiniku restaurant on the third floor of Kokura Noren-mura in Sakaimachi, where every table has its own charcoal hearth and guests grill premium beef, yakitori, seafood and vegetable-meat skewers over live coals. Go for the charcoal-smoke cooking at the table — Sendai beef tongue, thick-cut wagyu liver and soy-marinated raw crab — in a warm Showa-era room with semi-private zashiki seating.

What it is

Robata no Karisuma is built around a simple, direct idea: robata-yaki x yakiniku x yakitori x seafood x semi-private seating. Each table holds an irori-style charcoal hearth, so diners grill their own food while the smoky aroma of the coals fills the room. The kitchen combines traditional Japanese robata charcoal grilling with premium yakiniku cuts, yakitori skewers, fresh seafood and vegetable-wrapped meat rolls, working across several Japanese grilling disciplines rather than one.

The styling is warm and nostalgic, with a Showa-era retro feel — the kind of room where the charcoal smoke and the styling do as much of the work as the cooking. The restaurant is positioned in the Sakaimachi / Noren-mura area of Kokura, within easy reach of JR Kokura Station and the Kitakyushu Monorail, which makes it a practical dinner-and-drinks choice for anyone moving through central Kitakyushu.

What to order

Meat is the anchor, but the robata side of the menu is what separates Robata no Karisuma from a straight yakiniku house.

  • Sendai Beef Dai Toro Tan — a thick-cut premium beef tongue and a rare cut, with only a small portion taken from each tongue.
  • Thick-cut black wagyu special liver — a robata-style offal cut prepared thick.
  • Nakaochi kalbi (short rib) — the scrapeable short-rib cut.
  • Kanjan Kejan series — soy-marinated raw crab, served raw rather than grilled.
  • Seafood robata — ayu (sweetfish) and giant prawns grilled slowly over the hearth.
  • Vegetable-meat wrapped skewers — such as pork belly-wrapped quail eggs.
  • Seasonal seafood — scallops among the rotating items.
  • Winter seafood hot pot (kaisen nabe) — loaded with oysters, crab, prawns and scallops.
  • Frozen fruit sour drinks — the house cold drink.

For celebrations, the kitchen prepares a meat "flower plate" and a message dessert plate that comes with an instant photo and a signed board. This celebration service is limited to two groups per day, so it is worth arranging in advance if the meal marks an occasion.

The room

Robata no Karisuma seats 30 in total. The seating is semi-private zashiki (tatami-style) plus counter seats where you can watch the chef work; there are no fully enclosed private rooms. The restaurant can be booked out for groups of about 20 or more, with a maximum banquet capacity of 30, which makes it workable for a company gathering or a large family dinner.

The official site lists smoking as permitted throughout the restaurant. Children are welcome, and celebration/surprise service is available. All-you-can-drink course packages are offered with advance reservation. There is no on-site parking and no karaoke. Credit cards, iD e-money and PayPay are accepted.

Getting there

Robata no Karisuma is on the 3rd Floor of Kokura Noren-mura, 1-8-9 Sakaimachi, Kokurakita-ku, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture (福岡県北九州市小倉北区堺町1-8-9 小倉暖簾村3F), in the Sakaimachi / Noren-mura area of Kokura.

Access is straightforward from two directions: it is an 8-minute walk from JR Kokura Station, and a 5-minute walk from Heiwadori Station on the Kitakyushu Monorail. Both routes lead into the Sakaimachi district, where the Noren-mura building stands.

Who it suits

Robata no Karisuma suits diners who want to cook at the table over charcoal and who like the idea of ordering across beef, yakitori, seafood and vegetables in one sitting rather than committing to a single style. The irori hearth at every table is the point of the place, so it fits people who enjoy the process of grilling as much as the eating.

It also works for groups. With 30 seats, semi-private zashiki seating and the option to book the restaurant out for parties of about 20 or more, it is a reasonable setting for a company gathering, a family dinner or a birthday. The celebration service — the meat flower plate and the message dessert plate with an instant photo and a signed board — is designed for occasions, though it is limited to two groups per day. Because children are welcome and there is no karaoke or on-site parking, it is better suited to a dinner-first evening than a late-night party.

One note for visitors: the official site lists smoking as permitted throughout the restaurant, and there is no English menu. Diners comfortable with Japanese menus, or travelling with someone who reads Japanese, will find ordering simpler.
