Where it is

Hotel St. Moritz stands at 10-18 Brunswick Street, a residential street just above Queenstown's town centre. The centre is walkable from the door, though the return leg includes an uphill stretch. The reward for that slope is the outlook: Lake Wakatipu fills the view, with The Remarkables on the far side of the water.

The building and the lobby

The architecture is lodge-style rather than glass-tower modern: timber beams overhead and a stone fireplace anchoring the shared spaces. The lobby is designed for lingering, with armchairs gathered around the fire. It reads like a mountain residence, which is exactly what the hotel's own tagline promises.

The rooms

The room to know about is the One Bedroom Alpine Lake View Suite with Balcony, about 581 sq ft (roughly 54 m²). It has a separate bedroom, a living room with a dining area and a kitchenette, and a separate bathroom with a glass walk-in shower and a freestanding bathtub. The balcony looks out over Lake Wakatipu.

For families, the hotel has 27 connecting rooms, and babysitting can be requested. Do note that not every room category is lake-facing — the alpine lake view is a feature of specific rooms, not a blanket promise.

Lombardi Restaurant and the Hot Tub Garden

Lombardi Restaurant is the hotel's own dining room, and its windows frame mountain views rather than a street. It is the kitchen behind the hotel's signature picnic experience as well as its everyday service. Eat in, or take the terrace seating when the weather plays along.

The quieter draw is the Hot Tub Garden: a secluded garden fitted with traditional cedar hot tubs. It is the antidote to a day on the mountain — soak, then walk ten steps to your room.

What to know before you book

Three honest caveats. First, pets are not allowed in the hotel, so this is not a stop for travellers with dogs. Second, not all rooms look over the lake — if the view matters to you, request a lake-view category explicitly. Third, the walk to the town centre is genuinely walkable but the climb back up to Brunswick Street is on a slope.

One reassurance: the hotel holds New Zealand Qualmark accreditation, the country's official tourism quality mark, which means it has been independently assessed against New Zealand tourism standards. Payment is by Visa, MasterCard or American Express.

The Memorable Moment

Every MGallery hotel has a "Memorable Moment", and St. Moritz's is a private helicopter charter across Lake Wakatipu to "The Ledge" on Cecil Peak. There you get a half-hour picnic on the mountainside, prepared by Lombardi Restaurant and flown up with you. It is the kind of experience that is hard to arrange independently, and the lake-and-Remarkables panorama from Cecil Peak is the point of it.

Spaces and weather windows are limited, so ask the hotel about availability early in your stay rather than on the last morning.

Queenstown beyond the hotel

The hotel is a good base for the classic Queenstown outings. The TSS Earnslaw, the vintage steamship, cruises Lake Wakatipu from the Queenstown wharf, usually across to Walter Peak High Country Farm on the western shore. The Skyline Gondola climbs Bob's Peak above town for the familiar elevated view over the lake and The Remarkables.

For half-day or day trips, Glenorchy sits at the northern head of Lake Wakatipu, while Arrowtown is a historic gold-mining town in the hills nearby. East of town, the Gibbston Valley is Central Otago wine country along the Kawarau Gorge — the Kawarau Bridge there is the home of commercial bungy jumping, and Coronet Peak is the closest ski mountain.

Putting Hotel St Moritz into your itinerary

The hotel sits on the edge of the town centre, which makes it an easy base for the whole Wakatipu basin — you can walk to dinner and still be in the mountains by mid-morning.

1 day — Queenstown town centre and the Lake Wakatipu waterfront on foot, then the Skyline Gondola up to Bob's Peak for the view back over the lake and The Remarkables

2 days — The TSS Earnslaw across to Walter Peak High Country Farm, or the scenic drive north to Glenorchy at the head of the lake

3 days — Arrowtown and the Gibbston Valley wineries, with a stop at the Kawarau Bridge bungy — or a full day out to Milford Sound
