Chongqing spreads across steep hills where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet, so walking here means constant climbing and descending on stairways. A private tour lets you decide how much of the mountain city to explore and how far into the karst countryside to go.
Reading the map before you go
Chongqing's districts sit at wildly different elevations, and distances on the map rarely match the time it takes to get there. Downtown sights like Hongyadong and Ciqikou are compact but hilly; the karst areas in Fuling, Wulong and Nanchuan are a day trip each. Most independent travellers build 3 to 4 nights for the city itself, then add one or two nights if they want the wider landscape.
The mountain city core
Hongyadong sits right at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. It is a national 4A-level scenic area where traditional stilted houses stack up against modern towers, and the night views have made it one of Chongqing's most photographed spots. Expect crowded stairways after dark.
Liziba Light Rail Station on Line 2 is a working transit stop built into the 6th to 8th floors of a residential building. Trains pass straight through, and locals and visitors share the platform to watch. Arrive in the late afternoon if you want a seat; the building is an ordinary apartment block from the outside.
Ciqikou Ancient Town lies along the Jialing River with more than a thousand years of history, often called "Little Chongqing." Cobblestone streets, teahouses and red lanterns sit among preserved Ming and Qing architecture. It is walkable in half a day, though the main lane fills up on weekends.
Xiàhào Lǐ by Nanbin Road in Nanan District was once a busy treaty-port commercial district. Sichuan-style buildings with Western influences now house cafes and art shops. It is a short, flat stroll and a good counterpoint to the steep downtown lanes.
Day trips into the karst
Wulong Karst Tourism Area is a World Natural Heritage site and 5A scenic area holding the Three Natural Bridges and Furong Cave. Paths involve stone steps and uneven ground, so sturdy shoes matter. One full day covers both highlights if you start early.
Wulingshan Great Rift Valley in Fuling District is a deep karst landscape of cliffs, peaks and crevices favoured by hikers. Trails here are longer and more exposed than the city walks. Jinfo Mountain, a World Natural Heritage site and 5A area covering 1,300 square kilometres with a peak at 2,238 metres, changes with the season: alpine azaleas in spring, cool air in summer, colourful forest in autumn, and southern snow in winter.
The Dazu Rock Carvings, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1999, are cliff carvings from the late Tang to the Song Dynasty. The scale is grand and the craftsmanship fine, but the sites are spread out and involve walking between open-air niches.
Rivers, caves and ancient towns
Zhuoshui Ancient Town runs along the river with a long history and stilted buildings. Nearby, Puhua Dark River in the same town hides a 2-kilometre crystal-clear underground passage with stalactites and three natural bridges. The cave stays at a steady temperature year round, so it works in any season.
Youyang Peach Blossom Spring, the prototype of Tao Yuanming's tale, is a 5A area combining karst wonders with Tujia culture. The Aiyi River Scenic Area in Pengshui spans 21 kilometres and mixes mountains, rivers, forests and gorges; bamboo rafting, Qinglong Valley walks and drift sections are all on offer. Pengshui also holds Chiyou Jiuli City, the largest Miao traditional architectural complex in China, with the Nine Gates and Chiyou Hall.
Nights: hotpot and lanterns
Hotpot is the default Chongqing dinner, served bubbling with a heavy layer of chilli and Sichuan peppercorn. Tables sit along the riverside terraces near Hongyadong or in the lanes around Ciqikou, and meals run long. Tell your guide in advance if you want a milder bowl.
For a quieter evening, Jinfoshan Tianxing Town at the foot of Jinfo Mountain in Nanchuan District hosts "Classic of Mountains and Seas" themed lantern shows alongside hot spring resorts. The Jingangbei Old Village Hot Spring by the Jialing River and Jinyun Mountain is another secluded soak with a long history.
Practical notes
- Wear shoes with real grip; downtown stairways and karst trails are slick after rain, which is common in spring and autumn.
- Build 3 to 4 nights for the city core, plus one night each for Wulong or Fuling if you want the karst scenery.
- Summers are hot and humid, winters damp and grey; spring and autumn give the most comfortable walking weather across both city and mountains.
- Carry cash for small teahouses and market stalls, though cards work in most hotels and restaurants.
