Yufuin Private Tour: Onsen Town, Lake Kinrinko and Yunotsubo Kaido
Yufuin sits in a valley behind Mount Yufu in Oita Prefecture, and it is the kind of place that rewards a slower itinerary: a small onsen town built around one lantern-lit shopping street, a misty lake at the end of it, and ryokan with private baths in between. A private tour is the practical way to see it if you are travelling with family, older guests or a group that wants to set its own pace.
What a private tour in Yufuin actually looks like
Your car and driver meet you at your hotel, at Fukuoka Airport, or at Yufuin Station if you arrive by train. From there the day is yours: no waiting for a coach group, no fixed 40-minute stop. A driver who works this area daily will also tell you which side of Yunotsubo Kaido is less crowded at the hour you arrive — the street is one long gentle slope, and the crowd moves with the tour buses.
How to get to Yufuin
- By train: the JR Kyushu limited express Yufuin No Mori runs from Hakata to Yufuin in roughly two hours and ten minutes. It is a sightseeing train with reserved seats and it books out early in autumn and spring.
- By car from Fukuoka: roughly an hour and a half to two hours depending on traffic and the route you take through the mountains.
- Yufuin to Beppu: about an hour by car, which is why the two are usually paired in one itinerary. Beppu has the steam and the jigoku hot springs; Yufuin has the quiet.
What to see, in the order that works
Lake Kinrinko is at the top of the town and is best early, before the day-trippers arrive; the lake steams in cool weather and the small shrine on the water is the photograph everyone comes for. Yunotsubo Kaido is the walk back down — a street of small shops, croquette stands, honey and yuzu products. Tenso no Yu and the other bathhouses sit either side of it, and many ryokan open their day-use baths to non-guests at set hours.
If you have a second day, the usual extension is Beppu for the jigoku circuit, or Kurokawa Onsen further west for a quieter onsen village. Both are day trips by car, and both are easier with a driver than by bus timetable.
One day, two days, or a stop on a longer route
One day: Fukuoka pickup, Lake Kinrinko, Yunotsubo Kaido, a day-use onsen, back to Fukuoka by
early evening.
Two days: add Beppu, stay overnight in a ryokan with a private bath, and return the next
afternoon.
Longer: Yufuin works well as the middle stop on a five to eight day Kyushu route with
Fukuoka, Nagasaki or Kagoshima.
Who this suits
Families with small children, travellers with older parents, and anyone who would rather not move luggage between trains. Minibuses and larger vehicles can be arranged for bigger parties; there is no fixed group size for a private tour.
Frequently asked questions
Is one day in Yufuin enough?
For the town itself, yes — Lake Kinrinko, Yunotsubo Kaido and one onsen fit comfortably into a day. Two days are better if you want a ryokan night and Beppu as well.
Do I need to book the Yufuin No Mori train in advance?
Yes. It is a reserved-seat sightseeing train and popular dates sell out weeks ahead. If it is full, a car from Fukuoka takes a similar amount of time and stops where you want.
Can we visit Yufuin and Beppu in one day?
It is possible but tight. The two are about an hour apart by car, so a single day means picking one or two stops in each town rather than the full circuit.
Are the onsen open to day visitors?
Many ryokan and bathhouses in Yufuin sell day-use bathing at set hours, but opening times vary by property and season. Your driver will confirm on the day, or we can check when we build the itinerary.
Can you pick us up from Fukuoka Airport?
Yes. Airport pickup is the usual start for a Yufuin day trip, and it saves the transfer into Hakata first.
