Hitoyoshi Private Tour: The Kuma River, Aoi Aso Shrine and Eel
Hitoyoshi is a small castle town in the south of Kumamoto Prefecture, built where the Kuma River curves around a bluff of old stone walls. It is not on most first-time Kyushu itineraries, which is exactly why it still feels like a working town rather than a sightseeing set: a shrine that holds National Treasure status, a castle ruin with the best river view in the valley, and a food culture — river eel and rice shochu — that people drive a long way to eat.
Getting there
Hitoyoshi sits in a valley at the southern edge of Kumamoto Prefecture, where the Kuma River comes down out of the mountains. The map makes it look close to everything; the road makes it slower than it looks, so the day is best planned around daylight rather than around a timetable.
- From Kumamoto city: roughly an hour and a half by car, mostly on expressway.
- From Fukuoka: roughly two and a half hours by car.
- From Kagoshima: roughly an hour and a half to two hours by car, over the Ebino plateau.
- By rail: the Hisatsu Line, the mountain railway that once linked Yatsushiro with Hitoyoshi, was cut by the 2020 floods and is not a dependable option at present. Check the current position before you build a plan around it.
Because the town is a valley stop between Kumamoto and Kagoshima, most of our guests see it as the middle day of a southern route rather than as a destination on its own. It works both ways, but it works far better with a car.
包車 — charter
A charter here means a vehicle and driver for the day, and its value is mostly outside the town rather than inside. Central Hitoyoshi is genuinely walkable: the castle ruin, the shrine, the old shopping street and the riverbank are all within about twenty minutes of each other on foot. What the car solves is the valley around it — the boat boarding points, the onsen houses up side roads, the distilleries in the surrounding villages, and the villages of Kuma and Sagara where the bus runs a handful of times a day at best.
It also solves timing, which matters more than distance. Eel restaurants fill at lunch and close when the eel runs out. River boats stop when the water comes up. A distillery visit has to land inside its opening hours, not in the gap between two buses. With a driver, those three things can be ordered around each other instead of fought over.
包團 — private tour
A private tour adds the planning layer on top: which night goes in a ryokan with a private bath, whether the boat should be morning or afternoon, where lunch sits in the day, and how the drive south towards Kagoshima should be broken. We build the route first, send it to you with the measured driving time between each stop, and only book once you have agreed it. Nothing is reserved before the shape of the trip is settled.
One night in Hitoyoshi gets you the town, the shrine, a boat and an eel lunch without rushing. Two nights let you add a distillery visit, a long soak, and half a day in the villages upstream where the Kuma shochu is actually made. Families with older guests tend to prefer the two-night version, because the days stop being about the road.
Routes that work
Five days, south Kyushu only: Fukuoka in, two nights in Kumamoto with a day out to Aso, one night in Hitoyoshi for the shrine and the river, then out through Kagoshima. Short, and it never puts two long drives back to back.
Seven days, both ends of the prefecture: Fukuoka for two nights, Kumamoto for one, Hitoyoshi for two, Kagoshima for two, flying out of Kagoshima. This is the version we suggest most often, because Hitoyoshi stops being a stopover and becomes part of the trip.
Ten days, the whole south: Fukuoka two nights, Kurokawa Onsen or Aso one, Kumamoto one, Hitoyoshi two, Kagoshima two, Ibusuki one, out from Kagoshima. The extra days go into the onsen and the volcano, not into more driving.
When to come
Spring is the easiest season: mild roads, blossom along the river, and the castle bluff at its best in the morning light. Early summer brings fireflies over the Kuma River in the evenings, which is a genuine reason to stay the night rather than pass through. Autumn is the other strong season, with colour on the valley walls and morning mist sitting on the water until late.
Winter is quiet and cheap and the onsen is at its best, though the high road over to Kagoshima can be affected by snow. The rainy season in June and July, and the typhoon months of August and September, are when the river is most likely to be running high and the boats most likely to be stopped. The town handles rain perfectly well; the valley roads are another matter.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hitoyoshi worth stopping for between Kumamoto and Kagoshima?
Yes, if you give it a night. As a lunch stop it is rushed; as an overnight it covers a shrine, a castle ruin, a boat and one of the best eel meals in the prefecture without any of it feeling squeezed.
Can we ride a boat on the Kuma River?
Short downstream courses run from spring to autumn, with the exact season and route set by water level on the day. It is a calm river trip rather than white water, and it is the reason many people first hear about the town.
What should we eat here?
Eel, grilled over charcoal and served on rice, is the local signature, and the queues at lunchtime reflect it. Kuma shochu — a rice shochu made only in this valley — is the other thing to try, and it is served everywhere from the station shops to the ryokan dining rooms.
Can we visit a shochu distillery?
Several distilleries in and around Hitoyoshi open to visitors, usually by appointment and usually in the brewing season rather than midsummer. We arrange the visit as part of the route so that it fits the day rather than interrupting it.
How much walking is involved?
The town centre is flat and short, but the castle ruin is up a slope and the shrine has steps. Anyone who would rather not climb can be dropped at the top of the castle approach and walk down instead.
