Visiting China from Macau: Border Crossings and Entry Rules

Quick answer: Macau, like Hong Kong, is a separate immigration region from mainland China, so crossing into the mainland is its own entry event. Most travellers cross at Gongbei (Portas do Cerco) into Zhuhai, or use Hengqin Port, Qingmao Port or the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge. Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality: ordinary passport holders of 50 countries can enter visa-free for up to 30 days, others may use the 240-hour transit policy or need a visa arranged in advance. Always confirm the current rules with official sources before travelling.

Macau is its own immigration region

Under "one country, two systems", Macau SAR runs its own border. Entering Macau and entering the mainland are two separate procedures, with separate queues and separate document checks. This is exactly why Macau works well as a gateway: a traveller who arrives in Macau from abroad and then crosses into the mainland is crossing a regional boundary, which is relevant to the transit rules described below.

Crossing Destination Notes
Gongbei / Portas do Cerco (Border Gate) Zhuhai The classic pedestrian crossing — the busiest land port of its kind in China; walk straight into central Zhuhai
Hengqin Port Hengqin, Zhuhai Serves the Hengqin area and the rail link towards Guangzhou; convenient if you are starting on Hengqin island
Qingmao Port Zhuhai Newer crossing with automated clearance channels, generally less congested than Gongbei

Recent administrative changes have also simplified document checks for non-Chinese Macau residents at some of these ports — confirm the current arrangement with official sources if you hold a Macau residence permit.

Documents foreign visitors need

  • Passport valid for at least six months beyond the planned stay, with blank pages
  • Any visa required for the mainland, or evidence of visa-free eligibility
  • Proof of onward travel — especially if entering under the transit policy
  • Hotel booking or a mainland address
  • A completed arrival card, filled in before the immigration queue

Macau residents who are Chinese citizens use the Home Return Permit (回鄉證) instead of a passport. Everyone else queues at the "foreign passport" channels, which can be slower at Gongbei on weekends and holidays.

Visa-free entry (50 countries)

China's unilateral visa-free policy covers ordinary passport holders of 50 countries for stays of up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits and transit. The list includes 35 European countries (among them the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands), Australia and New Zealand, 7 Asian countries (including Japan, the Republic of Korea, Brunei and Saudi Arabia), and 6 in the Americas (including Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay). The policy is in force until 31 December 2026, 24:00 (UTC+8) per official announcements; confirm subsequent extensions before you book.

Note that the United States, India, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines are not on the list. Citizens of those countries should plan on a visa or the transit policy.

240-hour visa-free transit

Eligible nationalities transiting between two different countries or regions may stay up to 240 hours within the permitted region — for crossings from Macau, that region is typically Guangdong. Arriving from abroad into Macau and then crossing into the mainland can satisfy the two-region test; a simple Macau → mainland → Macau round trip generally cannot. Carry confirmed onward travel.

Visa in advance

Travellers who qualify for neither should arrange a Chinese visa before travel. Some border areas have historically offered limited port-visa facilities, but availability and eligibility change; do not rely on one without written confirmation from official sources.

Where people go from Macau

  • Zhuhai — immediately across Gongbei; a waterfront city with a relaxed pace, and the practical first stop for most day trips.
  • Zhongshan — roughly an hour north of Zhuhai by road, known for its historic town and Cantonese cuisine.
  • Guangzhou — reachable from Zhuhai or Hengqin by high-speed rail in roughly an hour; the Canton Tower, Shamian Island and Chen Clan Ancestral Hall are common stops.
  • Shenzhen — reachable via the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge region or by rail through Guangzhou; allow more time for the journey than the distance suggests.

Whichever city you choose, a private tailor-made tour of China can be built around your crossing point, so you are not backtracking across the delta.

Macau vs Hong Kong as a gateway

Via Macau Via Hong Kong
Main first crossing Gongbei into Zhuhai West Kowloon rail or Lo Wu into Shenzhen
First mainland city Zhuhai Shenzhen
High-speed rail From Zhuhai / Hengqin via Guangzhou Direct from West Kowloon
Shenzhen-only port visa Not applicable at Zhuhai ports Available at Luohu, Huanggang, Shekou

Both routes are sound; the better choice depends on which mainland cities are on your list and which airport you fly into.

FAQ

Do I need a visa to visit Zhuhai from Macau?

It depends on your nationality. Ordinary passport holders of the 50 visa-free countries can generally enter for up to 30 days; others may qualify under the 240-hour transit policy or need a visa in advance. Confirm against the current official list.

Which border crossing is the least crowded?

Gongbei is the busiest, especially on weekends and mainland public holidays. Qingmao and Hengqin are generally quieter alternatives, and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge works well for road transfers.

Can I use the Shenzhen visa on arrival when entering from Macau?

No. That permit is issued only at Shenzhen ports (Luohu, Huanggang, Shekou and Shenzhen airport). Entering via Zhuhai means the Shenzhen port visa is not an option.

Can I visit Guangzhou on a day trip from Macau?

Yes, commonly done by high-speed rail via Zhuhai or Hengqin, at roughly an hour's travel time each way. Check same-day return connections before you set out, and remember that any visa-free stay rules still apply.

Does the 30-day visa-free policy apply when entering from Macau?

Yes, for the 50 listed countries — Macau's separate immigration status does not change mainland entry rules. The policy currently runs until 31 December 2026 (24:00 UTC+8) per official announcements; verify later extensions at the time you travel.
