Four days in Huizhou — three nights — covers the Hakka heartlands and the Lingnan peaks of eastern Guangdong: the walled villages of the Hakka Po scenic area, the late-Ming fort at Xiangxi, the Taoist mountain of Luofu, the forests of Nankun, and Huizhou West Lake with its pagoda and the 770-year-old academy on its shore. Spring brings the rapeseed fields; autumn brings persimmons drying on the eaves.

Hakka villages and living heritage

The route begins in the Hakka Po scenic area, where the architecture is the point: enclosed courtyard houses built for defence as much as for family, with thick walls and a single entrance. Wandong Ancient Village is the slower alternative — alleys leading between ancestral halls shaded by old banyans, and a pace that rewards simply walking.

The landscape changes with the season. Rapeseed flowers the fields in spring; in autumn the village eaves are hung with persimmons drying in the sun. Xiangxi Fort, further along, sits beside the river with late-Ming grey-brick walls still standing and lanes that have kept their shape.

Luofu Mountain

Luofu is the spiritual centre of the region and one of the ten great Taoist mountains of China. Its 432 summits are usually wrapped in mist, and its temples are associated with the alchemist Ge Hong, who is said to have made his elixirs here. The walk to Flying Cloud Summit is the standard undertaking — timed for sunrise, it gives the cloud sea below.

Lower down, hot springs sit beneath lychee groves: after the climb, that is not a bad arrangement.

Nankun Mountain

Called the Emerald of Guangdong, Nankun is a national forest park of intact forest, waterfalls and mist-covered ridges. The hiking routes range from an hour to most of a day, and in winter the higher slopes frost over — which is unusual enough this far south to be worth planning around. Azaleas come out in spring.

Huizhou West Lake

West Lake is the cultural centre of the city: five lakes, six bridges and eighteen named vistas, laid out over centuries and finished by the poets who wrote about it. Su Dongpo, exiled to Huizhou in the eleventh century, is the reason the lake is famous beyond Guangdong, and his verses are still projected over the water in evening light shows.

Cruise past the lotus ponds, or climb the Sheng Pagoda on the shore for the view back over the city — the pagoda is the image most people carry away from Huizhou.

Fenghu Academy

On a peninsula on the lake stands Fenghu Academy, at 770 years one of Lingnan's Four Great Academies and still holding around 100,000 ancient books. It is a working piece of scholarly history rather than a reconstruction, looking out across the Dong river.

Old Huizhou, after dark

The old town around the city wall is worth an evening. The Chaoking gate is lit at night, and the market streets inland from it run late — this is the part of the trip where the food matters as much as the sights.

Practical notes

Season. Spring for the rapeseed fields and the azaleas on Nankun; autumn for the persimmons and the clearest mountain views. Summer in Guangdong is hot and wet, and the mountains sit in cloud.

Getting there. Huizhou is a short high-speed rail hop from Shenzhen or Guangzhou, which makes this the most accessible of our Guangdong routes — and an easy add-on to a Hong Kong trip.

What four days buys. The Hakka villages and Xiangxi Fort, a full day on Luofu, Nankun, and West Lake with the academy. Three days covers the lake and one mountain; five adds time in the villages.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4 days enough time to see Huizhou?

Yes, for the core of it — the Hakka villages, Luofu or Nankun Mountain, and West Lake with Fenghu Academy. Add a day if you want both mountains.

What is the best season to visit Huizhou?

Spring for the rapeseed flowers and azaleas, or autumn for the persimmons and clearer mountain views. Summer is hot, wet and often clouded in.

Do I need to speak Chinese to enjoy this tour?

Not on a private itinerary — your guide handles the language, and the villages and mountain temples see few foreign visitors.

Is this itinerary suitable for families?

Yes. The village walks and West Lake are easy, and Mount Luofu can be taken by cable car rather than on foot, which suits children and older travellers.
