HOTEL THE LEBEN Osaka is a design hotel on a quiet lane in Minamisenba, between Shinsaibashi and Nagahoribashi — eight minutes on foot from Shinsaibashi station, three from Nagahoribashi, and about ten to the start of the Shinsaibashi shopping street. Every room is 30 m² or more, which is the argument: at this price in central Osaka you usually get a box. Every room also has the bath and the toilet in separate rooms, there is a shoe cabinet at the entrance because you take your shoes off, and the lobby runs a free self-service drinks and amenities bar. Rooms start around HK$1,100 a night.

Central Osaka is full of hotels where you open the door and the bed is the room. THE LEBEN takes the opposite position and makes it the entire offer: the smallest room here is 30 m². The entry-level Standard Double is 30 m² with a 1,800 mm bed. The Corner Double shown above is 37 m² with windows on two sides and a sofa that unfolds into a 1,670 mm bed, which is how these rooms sleep four.
Two design decisions do most of the work. First, the bath and the toilet are in separate rooms in every category — the official site names this as one of the three reasons guests are happiest here, and having stayed in enough Japanese business hotels to know the alternative, it is worth the space it costs. Second, there is a shoe cabinet at the entrance, on the Japanese principle that you take your shoes off indoors. Small thing. It changes how the room feels.
Where it is
The address is 2-2-15 Minamisenba, Chuo-ku — a lane of offices and apartment buildings, which makes it unusually quiet for the location. There is a Lawson at the end of the lane. You are one street back from the shopping, not on top of it, and that is the trade: eight minutes to Shinsaibashi station on the Midosuji line, three to Nagahoribashi on the Sakaisuji and Nagahori Tsurumi-ryokuchi lines, ten minutes' walk to the Shinsaibashi shopping street, and around fifteen to Dotonbori.
Guests here skew noticeably to Hong Kong, Korean and Taiwanese travellers, and there is Chinese-speaking front desk staff — not universal in this category.

The two to look at are the LEBEN Twin and the LEBEN Suite: these are the "LEBEN-style" rooms where the living area and the bedroom are separate rooms rather than one space, which for four people sharing is a different trip entirely. The Universal Double is genuinely equipped for wheelchair users and older guests, which is rarer than it should be.
房間內設
最常被人寫到的是浴室：一條長長的白色檯面沿牆身伸展，配雙面盆，檯邊設有一張椅子，方便坐下來化妝，另設獨立淋浴間。牙刷用不同顏色分開，避免拿錯。坐廁是暖蓋式坐便器，並且獨立於一個房間之內。
備品選用PROVINSCIA，是日本的酒店品牌，洗髮水及護髮素均為有機薰衣草配方。一般酒店在這個位置只會提供牆身壁掛式的大瓶裝，這裡的選品卻是放在自家浴室也會想用的質感。
其他值得留意的設施：每位客人有兩個枕頭外加一個小靠枕，備有剪裁柔軟新穎的睡衣，兩種拖鞋（可重用的皮拖鞋及即棄布拖鞋），設有配套茶杯的電熱水壺，以及雪櫃。而客人提及最多的一項細節，是房內附送一樽 2 公升礦泉水，另加兩小樽方便外出攜帶，每日補充。在日本，一間不需客人自費買水的酒店，本身已經是一種姿態。
大堂
很多的價值其實都在地層大堂。那裡設有自助備品吧，供應水果茶、茶包及咖啡，住客免費享用，全日開放，外出時亦可取用外帶杯。旁邊是客房備品自選站，包括雪肌精護膚品試用裝及DHC 橄欖系列入浴包，並備有小型牛皮紙袋，方便客人挑選自己想要的，帶回房間。這個系統雖小，卻見心思，而正正是這些細節，決定一趟住宿是否令人感到慷慨周到。

這個價錢，在大阪市中心換來 30 平方米、浴缸與坐廁分離的客房，在此價格帶確實很難找得到。當中的取捨是：這是一間設計出色、超越三星級的酒店，並非豪華酒店，沒有泳池、沒有水療設施，除早餐外亦沒有餐廳。
房價會隨季節大幅變動。旺季入住的客人曾形容房價以設施而言偏高；但在淡季入住同一間房，卻是划算的選擇。若你的日期有彈性，這正是值得調整行程的例子之一。
預訂前須知
走廊空間充足，睡房地面卻不算闊裕。以大阪的標準而言，這些客房屬大房型，但以歐美標準則未必算大。有客人指出，大型行李箱平放開啟需要花點心思搬弄。37 平方米或以上的房型可以解決這個問題；30 平方米的房間則是折衷之選。
帶同嬰兒床入住的家庭：預訂前請先查詢。有客人帶著一歲大的孩子入住，發現酒店提供的嬰兒床高度固定；當她要求調低時，職員表示無法協助，需要客人自行準備工具，並自負風險。最後她只能將床褥直接放在地上。酒店其後或已調整做法，但帶同嬰兒出行，請以書面方式向酒店確認。
這是巷仔，不是大道。以這個地段而言非常安靜，這正是客人喜歡的原因——但到任何地方都要步行數分鐘。
