The Silk Road at ground level
A south Xinjiang tour follows the southern arc of the Silk Road, where oasis towns, bazaars and ruined citadels sit against dune fields and high plateaus. This route suits independent travellers who prefer a private vehicle, unhurried walking days and time to look at things properly rather than ticking off a list.
Kashgar: old alleys and the market
Kashgar Old Town is the anchor of the first part of the trip. The lanes are narrow, uneven and mostly flat, but the surface is cobbled in places and crowds thicken through the morning. Allow a full day to walk the historic core, then another half-day for the Central and West Asia Market, where spice stalls, carpet sellers and copper workshops occupy a maze of covered passages. Two nights in Kashgar is a workable minimum; three lets you breathe.
The oasis towns: Shache and Zepu
The corridor west of Kashgar links two stops worth time. Shache was a key hub on the ancient Silk Road, and the Yarkand Khan Mausoleum there rewards a slow visit: grand Islamic architecture with painted tile detail, best seen in clear afternoon light. Further on, the Zepu Golden Poplar Forest is one of China's largest poplar stands; in autumn the leaves go fully gold against blue sky and desert, which is why photographers time the trip for that season. Walking here is on flat ground with sandy sections underfoot.
To the edge of the Taklamakan
The southern route grazes the northern rim of the Taklamakan, so the landscape shifts between irrigated farmland, poplar belts and open sand. Distances between towns are long and there is little shade, so travel days are built around early starts and midday stops rather than continuous driving. The contrast between the dune field and the green oasis strips is the point of this leg.
Up onto the Pamir Plateau
The high section climbs onto the Pamir, where the air thins and weather changes quickly. The Panlong Ancient Road switchbacks through snow peaks and deep valleys, an unforgettable "sky road" that works by vehicle or bicycle. The "Eye of the Pamir" is a small lake with a pupil-like shape and shifting colour, reached by a short walk from the roadside. Bandir Lake presents emerald-green water framed by snow-capped peaks, and the Stone City Ruins — an old Silk Road outpost — sits on weathered walls where history is felt rather than explained.
Wetlands, villages and glacier park
Tahman Wetland offers flat boardwalks and grassland where birdlife gathers, an easy stroll between longer driving days. The Tajik Folk Village shows traditional stone houses and local dance performances; visits are brief and respectful, with uneven stone paths underfoot. Muztagh Ata Glacier Park frames the "Father of Ice Mountains" with snow-capped peaks, and the park allows hiking or horseback riding to get closer to the ice. Bai Sha Lake contrasts crystal-clear blue water with white sand dunes on the plateau, a landscape photographers return to.
How long to spend
For the Silk Road cities plus the plateau, ten to fourteen nights works well. A shorter plan of seven to eight nights covers Kashgar, Shache and Zepu with one night up on the Pamir, but it means long driving days and fewer stops. Add an extra night in Kashgar if you plan to shop or revisit the market.
Practical notes
- Autumn is the strongest season for the Zepu Golden Poplar Forest and Golden Grass Beach; winter is cold on the plateau but quiet in the oasis towns.
- Altitude on the Pamir is significant — take the first day slowly if you have flown in from lowland cities.
- Walking surfaces vary from cobbled lanes in Kashgar Old Town to sand and uneven stone paths at the ruins; sturdy shoes are essential.
- Carry layers: mornings are cool on the plateau even when midday sun is strong.
